It’s obvious what Trump is doing by deploying heavily armed military to Los Angeles: When he’s embarrassed, he pivots to something even more offensive to distract Americans. Last week, he was embarrassed by Elon Musk implying he’s a pedophile, DOGE’s collapse, and his deeply unpopular bill gutting healthcare for millions of Americans.

The LA deployments are modern-day bread and circuses for Republicans — spectacles to distract while stripping the poor and middle class of social services so they can give the wealthy tax cuts. The fact that so many Republicans are thrilled for masked government agents hunting down down peaceful immigrants for mass deportations is disgusting.

Of course, the entire Los Angeles crackdown is based on a lie — just like Republicans lied about voter fraud (untrue), government fraud (untrue), and immigrants “eating cats and dogs” (untrue).

As Immigrants, including undocumented immigrants, commit less crime than American-born citizens. They pay taxes. They take jobs Americans won’t take. Most importantly, they add a richness to American culture that’s woven into the very fabric of America.

Republicans have no popular policies — tax cuts for the wealthy, abortion bans, and slashing Social Security and Medicare are all extremely unpopular — so they rile up their base by demonizing immigrants. Now they’re using masked thugs from ICE, arresting people with no warrants and deporting them with no due process. They’re trying to enter elementary schools. They brutally separate parents from children. This is exactly what Project 2025 promised and what Republicans support.

All of this is extremely ironic from a party that claims to support “states’ rights” (they don’t), “small government” (they explode deficits), and “legal immigration.”They claim to be the party of “law & order” (the President is a felon). The GOP chant about “small government” is obviously a lie as they deploy the military to American streets and embrace surveillance tech. But pointing out the hypocrisy is irrelevant. Authoritarian governments thrive on hypocrisy.

In my comments, you’ll see lots of angry, bloodthirsty right-wing commenters respond to this saying things like “We voted for this” and “We want them gone.” Almost all of them will be anonymous. (At least half of them will be bots.) Reading them, and seeing the people we’re you’re surrounded with, you will understand exactly how atrocities have happened in history. And how they’re happening today.

Multiple things can be true at once.

Undocumented immigrants who commit serious crimes should be deported. But we also need a real, humane path to citizenship for millions of decent, law-abiding people who work and pay taxes and are just trying to build a life here.

Peaceful protest and free speech must be protected always. But those who attack police or destroy property should be arrested and prosecuted.

And yes, Trump sending the National Guard into L.A. was wrong. It didn’t restore order, it escalated chaos. Which, let’s be honest, is exactly what he wanted.

We can hold more than one truth at once.

Recessions don’t hit all parts of the country equally. IMO, small cities, towns and states will get hit the worst. And it won’t be pretty.

They are more dependent on federal spending, so they will feel the brunt of federal spending cuts and job reductions disproportionately. They can be catastrophic to a town.

Because they are smaller, and more expensive to reach, they are more susceptible to the impact of tariffs and will be the first to see their product shipments cut when there are shortages, and their prices will go up more as a result.

They will see fabrics of their communities cut. The local museum. The local health clinic. And so much more cut.

The stories of the economy won’t be told here. They won’t be told in GDP numbers.

Openly ridiculing and demeaning a man who has kept his country alive for three years against all the odds is a national embarrassment and runs counter to our own security interests. But they could care less that Ukraine was invaded by Russia — the second biggest military power on the planet — led by a ruthless dictator willing to sacrifice soldiers and civilians by the hundreds of thousands. Trump and JD trying to look tough in front of the cameras even though it’s Zelensky who is the strongest one in the room. The guy who was supposed to lose to Russia in a matter of hours or days is still there, fighting. As are the brave Ukrainian soldiers on the front line.

We help Ukraine because it’s the right thing to do for a fellow democracy that is suffering a brutal invasion AND because if Ukraine were to fall, the next fight would be on the front lines of our NATO allies and our military would be treaty-bound to join the war. In other words, Ukraine is shouldering the total cost in terms of the fighting, the lives forever damaged and the lives lost so that we and our European allies don’t have to.

Trump and Vance are not only abandoning Ukraine. They are abandoning the security of our country. Today they made it much more likely that our service members will be fighting again in Europe, 80 years after countless brave Americans helped liberate the continent and make it safe for democracy.

BREAKING: Mexican President Claudia Sheinbaum Pardo has released the following video condemning Trump's tariffs and her plan for retaliation -- translated into English (subtitle translation is a bit rough).

This comes after she released the following written explanation:

"As Juarez said: Nothing by force; everything by reason and right. Between individuals, as between nations, respect for the rights of others is peace.

We categorically reject the slander made by the White House against the Government of Mexico, accusing it of having alliances with criminal organizations, as well as any interventionist intentions in our territory.

If there is any such alliance, it exists in U.S. gun shops that sell high-powered weapons to these criminal groups, as demonstrated by the U.S. Department of Justice in January of this year.

Our government has seized more than 40 tons of drugs in four months, including 20 million doses of fentanyl. We have also arrested more than ten thousand people linked to these groups.

If the U.S. government and its agencies want to address the serious fentanyl consumption problem in their country, they could, for example, combat the sale of narcotics on the streets of their major cities—something they do not do—as well as the money laundering generated by this illegal activity, which has caused significant harm to their population.

They could also launch a massive campaign to prevent drug consumption and protect their youth, as we have done in Mexico. Drug consumption and distribution occur in their own country, and that is a public health problem they have not addressed. Moreover, the synthetic opioid epidemic in the United States originates from the indiscriminate prescription of these medications, authorized by the Food and Drug Administration (FDA), as demonstrated by the legal case against a pharmaceutical company.

Mexico does not seek confrontation. We believe in collaboration between neighboring countries. Mexico does not want fentanyl to reach the United States—or anywhere else. Therefore, if the United States truly wants to combat the criminal groups that traffic drugs and fuel violence, we must work together in a comprehensive manner, but always under the principles of shared responsibility, mutual trust, collaboration, and, above all, respect for sovereignty—which is non-negotiable. Coordination, yes; subordination, no.

For this reason, I propose to President Trump that we establish a working group with our best security and public health teams.

Tariffs will not solve these problems. Instead, we must talk and negotiate, just as we have in recent weeks with the U.S. State Department to address migration, always respecting human rights on our side.
