I know I'm piling on here, but 2023 has been such a sad year for "unforced errors" in Radiation Oncology.

While I don't agree with specific results of the workforce study, it was performed in good faith, and the article that accompanied the HMA report (the actual "big" one with @CShahMD) was measured in tone.

However, the heavy spin that has been used to "report" on the workforce study is blunt and ham-fisted. It's just wasteful, because if @ASTRO_org is going to spend a few hundred thousand dollars to ignore data, that money could have gone for travel grants or patient advocate registration instead.

So then we have a surprise payment model dropped on everyone out of the clear blue sky without any actual timeline or support, performative webinars labeled as "Town Halls", amplification of the Washington Post article which doesn't reflect our reality, the summer newsletter reaffirming balance and even the word "shortage" showing up in an article...and now this?

To be clear, I assume this was an off-the-cuff joke from Recht. There's no conspiracy or ill-intent. But it's literally the point that I and many others have been making for years.

It certainly appears that, for two decades, the established leadership built themselves a ladder, climbed up, and then burned it behind them.

If a news article runs with the headline literally saying radiotherapy is disappearing, and quotes a FASTRO/FACRO physician saying "lol yeah but I got mine", even as a joke -

You're not just setting fire to the ladder, you're kicking it into our face as it burns.
