HARD90 51/90: FASTER HARDWARE by slowing down

Imagine if every time you hit "compile", it could take anywhere from a few days to a few weeks to figure out if your code worked depending on how you wrote it.

You'd want to be pretty sure that it worked as planned every time.

This is the silent killer of hardware projects--work your butt off on a design and send it off to a vendor, only to find you forgot to specify the correct thread on one of your holes so now nothing assembles.

I can already hear the keyboard jockeys asking, why not just 3d print everything? Then you can get a much faster cycle time!

The problem is that 3d printing has a limited resolution and durability, so when you're later in the process and are working with production materials and processes it doesn't give you a good read.

Ironically, going "slower" by taking the extra day to get peer review on each release actually produces a faster overall design process because it reduces the risk of a wasted build.

When it takes days to weeks every time you release your design (or hit compile in the software analogy), the overall schedule is shortest when you do the fewest releases.

Going slow can be the fastest way.
