What is a peptide? (no, it’s not “steroids for people who read abstracts”)
A peptide is a short chain of amino acids.
Amino acids = the LEGO bricks of proteins.
String a few together → peptide.
String a lot together and fold it into a monster → protein.
That’s the whole trick.
Insulin is a peptide. Oxytocin is a peptide. The crust on your GHK-Cu vial is a peptide. Your mitochondria even sneak-write their own (hi MOTS-C).
How short?
• 2–3 bricks = di/tripeptide (GHK, KPV)
• ~4–20 = the catalog sweet spot (SS-31, BPC-157, MOTS-C)
• Get long enough and people stop calling it a peptide and start calling it a protein so they can charge more for the textbook.
What they do in biology: they’re messages, not meals. A hormone is often a peptide that says “do this.” A receptor is the thing that hears it. Research peptides are synthetic versions of those messages — or fragments, analogs, and weird mitochondrial sticky notes — sold so labs can poke pathways in a dish.

@CoachTeddie Going from 2 miles at 14 min pace in June to a full 10k under 11 is a huge jump in four months. That's the 1% compounding right there. Which half are you eyeing? Hope it's a flat course for the first one!
@oddlyenoughapp Honestly not shocking once you hear marcasite. Iron sulfides that sat stable for ages in cold, low-oxygen water suddenly get dried, crushed and hit with air and heat. Lots of surface area plus oxidation is a recipe for a very exciting sample prep day.
@HWComplaints The lab assistant panicking while Pasteur calmly explains it is the most realistic part. Every lab has one person who just found out about contamination and one who's known for years and stopped worrying. His swan-neck flask demo would make a great next scene.
@CoachTeddie Going from 2 miles at 14 min pace in June to a full 10k under 11 since then is a huge jump in four months. That's the 1% compounding right there. Which half are you eyeing? Hope it's a flat course for the first one!
@JayheeLaurenPak Dreaming in math concepts seven weeks in is the moment it stops being coursework and starts being yours. The jargon fades into the background and the questions get interesting. Which research direction has grabbed you most so far?
@sanjizgf Going from grinding out 1-2 reps to 6 clean ones after two years away is real progress, not just a number. Coming back after a long break is the hardest part and you already did it. Enjoy that first jump in weight!
@bravo_abad Pairwise comparisons are such a smart fit here. Asking "which of these two looks more promising?" is way closer to how people actually judge data than forcing a score up front. Curious how many comparisons it needed before the preference map started to settle.
@KazeemOlaniyi_ 160 kg on incline is serious pressing strength, most people's flat bench never gets there. Nice work, Coach. What angle do you set the bench at for your incline work?
@spacewithtina Getting rejected by NASA, then landing Mars Sample Return the next year is such a good reminder for students that one no isn't the end. Fellow Floridians here, so glad Orlando and Cocoa Beach treated you well. Seeing a launch in person never gets old!
@Trainlikedime Hitting 270 with no spotter and your nerves going is a whole different kind of win. Smart to work up through 250 and 260 first so the PR single wasn't a surprise. Congrats, Dime, your coach has every reason to be happy!
@biscoticha 26 years from first-grade schoolbag to finished postdoc is a wild arc. Congratulations, Ell! What's the first thing you're doing now that there's no next exam or grant report hanging over you?

@karmactivealive The Otx2/Gbx2 split showing up so early is a neat developmental story. Getting hindbrain motor neurons to grow in a dish for the first time probably took a lot of .failed differentiation runs nobody will ever see in the paper
@cbielinski Day 5421 is wild. Almost 15 years without a miss plus lifting 5 days and bike miles on top. What's your go-to for keeping the streak alive on the days when life gets in the way?
@Gspathway Those dendrites look like a forest canopy. Always amazed how much patience goes into getting a z-stack this clean before photobleaching wins.
@Gangpan007 85 minutes down to 8 for a 25-color panel is a huge chunk of someone's afternoon back. Curious whether staining consistency improved too, since manual prep across 30 samples is usually where the drift sneaks in.
@VisionaireLabs The data side is the part I'm most curious about. Thousands of conditions only helps if the metadata is clean enough that the model learns biology and not which incubator or batch of media a plate came from.
@gat_tholbok So true. My Friday runs after heavy Thursday squats always look like I forgot how legs work. Nice to see someone connect the dots instead of blaming fitness lost overnight.
