Scripture doesn’t really say why it was a serpent, but we do know that the plague that was afflicting the Israelites was poisonous serpents. So the serpent on the pole was seemingly a depiction of the same serpents that were biting and killing the people. That’s the only connection that Scripture explicitly gives. Hope this helps!
