@kenzipalmerbsu I too found this interesting. Personally, I have formed online relationships but they don't compare in quality to offline ones. If anything, they slowly go away and I use media/social media to make sure the quality of my offline one continues. #450SocialSP23
@Skirp_Rawdogin This was something that stood out to me as well. If someone were to only know me based off of LinkedIn, they view me completely different than someone who knows who I am from Instagram. This is a crazy concept because these apps create different versions of us. #450SocialSP23
We know how important social cues are & we need to put ourselves in situations where we can fully read them. For example, an interview or meeting a new roommate. The media opened a lot of doors, but there are some things that should be done the old fashion way. #450SocialSP23
@RehkemperLainey This was something I came to realize as well. Before this class I found social media to be frustrating, but as you said it is a tool. I think our perspective on the topic varies depending on how we choose to use it. #450SocialSP23
In 2017, 2/3 of Americans said they got a good portion of their news from social media. This was a huge deal during elections. Have you ever come across fake news online? What did you do about it? #450SocialSP23
@danny_appleford My online to offline relationship didn’t last long and it wasn’t a huge deal because for they exact reason, it was mostly online. Sometimes the connection simply isn’t there in person even when you spend a good amount of time texting or snap chatting. #450SocialSP23
@KelbyAndrew4 I’m actually the exactly the opposite of your question. When my relationship is stronger with someone, I stick to only texting. My reason for this is because I like having our conversation in one place and not disappear like they do on certain apps. #450SocialSP23
@DarneilleAustin Yes, I feel like when we meet someone online and they are good at things like responding fast, have a good sense of humor, and we like their writing style, we tend to fill in the blanks about the rest of their characteristics. #450SocialSP23
Cross sex relationships are often frowned upon in society as people think opposite genders can’t be just friends. People go as far to say it's a “threat to social order.” Is it easier for these friendships to happen online? #450SocialSP23
@Caresse_BSU I am not currently involved in any online communities. This is something I think would be good to do after graduation as things obviously change. Online groups/communities are a great way to meet people with similar interests. #450SocialSP23
@LPFbsu I can’t say I play a huge role in different communities/social media/IRL. I think it’s healthy to be apart of things and would be interested in changing my role IRL. When it comes to social media, I’ve always been a viewer and I don’t think that’ll change. #450SocialSP23
@danny_appleford You can’t be 100% sure that the person your talking to online is who they say they are. That may be why some people enjoy it… it allows you to be someone you may not be for a certain amount of time. It can be an escape for a lot. Especially in these groups. #450SocialSP23
@DarneilleAustin The internet allows for people that struggle with anxiety to express their true selves while being more comfortable in conversation. But is that is enough to take place of face-to-face interactions? There needs to be a balance and it depends on the persons needs #450SocialSP23
Everyone has their preferences when it comes to social media. What kind of platforms do you enjoy the most and why? I find it fascinating that apps go through phases of popularity and that we just keep continuing to build a digital footprint.

@garlandwaltz I definitely think it has changed our psychological needs. Some that come to mind are our authentic connections and self significance. It is important to get out into the world so you're able to communicate with others and pick up on their social cues.

@LPFbsu I personally do not take a lot of selfies unless it is on the app BeReal or Snapchat. This is my way of keeping others updated and keeping in contact with my friends that are in a different state. When they were first a thing I didn't act/look as casual as now.
#450SocialSP23
@KelbyAndrew4 The affordances selfies grant us depend on your intention behind the picture. Sometimes you are just casually taking a picture of yourself to keep in touch with people or you are needing that validation that comes along with them in certain situations.

The social construction of technology perspective describes how people are the source of change in technology and society. While the social shaping perspective explains how technology and society continually influence one another. Which do you lean more towards?

@KelbyAndrew4 I would also be interested in seeing what a Web 3.0 looks like. Personally, I can’t imagine it as I feel the internet’s ability is scary enough. It’s definitely possible but I feel like it would further jeopardize our privacy and safety. #450SocialSP23
@DarneilleAustin A lot of people get anxiety when in face-to-face situations and asynchronous communication can eliminate that. This is a huge advantage for some, however, it can become a disadvantage as their overall communication skills will suffer when in the real world. #450SocialSP23
