I once had an interview with Azeem when I was looking for my first job.

I was young, excited, wanting to become a writer.

East India Comedy used to work from a 3-BHK at the time. Sahil Shah had helped me land the interview.

Azeem looks at my CV and the first thing he tells me is - "I have blocked you on Twitter."

I thought it was a strange way to begin an interview. I had never interacted with him on Twitter. We never had even an exchange or any conversation.

So he opens my profile on his laptop, unblocks me (so he can access the Tweets) and then scrolls down and reads a few tweets till he finds one particular tweet and says - "Ah yes, it was this one."

AIB at that time had made a video where they made jokes on cows / gaumutra in the sketch. I had put out a tweet stating that it was easy for comics to make jokes on Hinduism but I've never seen them take such liberty with other religions / faiths / beliefs. And that they were not equal opportunity offenders.

I was asked to 'explain' this tweet. And so I did. And it led to a discussion and argument for over 10 minutes, where I was repeatedly told I was wrong, after which the interview ended. I had applied to be a 'writer' and I was asked nothing about it - what I had written, what I wanted to write, my skillsets and so no. Nothing.

I was too young to be confident or have strong self belief, and I walked out thinking maybe I shouldn't have put out that tweet - it cost me this job.

What I found strange even back then, was that a person much senior to me in the profession, would be fixated on some tweet, and was not open to another opinion or point-of-view that was different from his.

Surely, it would help to have people with different views writing for a news satire show?

I was naive.

The goal is never diversity of thought or opinion.

The view or angle is always pre-decided. All they need is people to further it.

As a Telugu from Tamil Nadu, I can relate to this.
Our Telugu has evolved differently across places Kovai Telugu, Kovilpatti Telugu, Virudhunagar Telugu, Madras Telugu, etc. and is quite different from the Telugu spoken in Andhra/Telangana.

Forget Telugu-medium schools; even finding Telugu as a second language or language of choice can be extremely difficult in many parts of Tamil Nadu.

Gradually, I have seen younger members of my own family stop speaking Telugu even at home after starting school, with schools encouraging them to communicate in either Tamil or English.

When children are systematically pushed towards Tamil or English or Hindi the result can be systematic linguistic assimilation.
History has already shown us, including in Sri Lanka, where linguistic majoritarianism can lead. That is a serious issue we need to understand.

A quarter of Tamil Nadu has Telugu roots, yet Telugu still does not enjoy the same official language status in Tamil Nadu that Tamil enjoys in Sri Lanka, Singapore, Malaysia.

Think about that.

Tamil is an official language of Sri Lanka alongside Sinhala, one of Singapore’s four official languages alongside English, Malay and Mandarin and a recognised language in Malaysia.

Meanwhile, Telugu, THE major historic language of southern India, with deep roots across the present day Tamil Nadu, native to all of the lands North of Kaveri isn't recognised as an official language neither is it taught in the schools.

The Telugu consensus in Tamil Nadu is slowly awakening.

And I want to see the day when Telugu people in Tamil Nadu enjoy the same confidence, recognition and institutional respect that Tamil speakers have secured beyond India's borders in Malaysia, Singapore, Srilanka.

Rani Rudrama Devi, the illustrious Kakatiya ruler, is inseparably associated with Warangal and represents the courage, heritage and identity of Telangana. Naming the airport after her would be a fitting tribute to our glorious history.
