EV batteries use loads of lithium and then it’s gone forever.

Except that’s not how it works.

A typical electric car battery contains around 5-10kg of lithium, depending on its size.

Unlike petrol or diesel, that lithium isn’t burned every time you drive. It stays inside the battery for years and can be recovered at the end of its life.

“But don’t they all end up in landfill?”

No.

Many EV batteries get a second life in stationary energy storage after they’re no longer suitable for use in a car.

When they do eventually reach the end of their useful life, modern recycling processes can recover over 95% of the valuable battery materials, including lithium, nickel, cobalt and copper, so they can be used again in new batteries.

Looking ahead, the International Energy Agency estimates that battery recycling could reduce demand for newly mined materials by around:

• 25% less new lithium
• 25% less new nickel
• 40% less new cobalt

The difference is simple.

A tank of petrol is burned once and disappears forever.

The materials inside an EV battery can be reused, recycled and put back into new batteries time and time again.

That’s called a circular economy.

It’s not perfect.

But it’s a lot closer to one than burning 16 billion litres of petrol and diesel every year in the UK.

This is a much bigger story than a 1% decline.

For the first time in modern history, the world's largest energy system — with more than 4.1 TW of installed capacity — appears to be showing a sustained decline in CO₂ emissions while electricity demand, industrial output and economic activity continue to grow.

This isn't happening because China is consuming less energy. It's happening because China is rapidly replacing fossil energy growth with electrification and clean electricity at unprecedented scale.

In just the past year, China added around 434 GW of solar, wind and storage, while electrification of transport, industry and buildings continues to accelerate:

🚗 Passenger EVs now dominate new car sales.
🚚 Commercial vehicles and heavy trucks are electrifying faster than most forecasts anticipated.
🏭 Industry is increasingly switching from fossil fuels to electricity.
🏢 Heat pumps, electric boilers and other commercial electrification technologies are scaling rapidly.

One year doesn't establish a trend. But if this decline persists, historians may eventually look back on March 2024 as the moment the world's largest emitter reached its true emissions peak.

The significance is hard to overstate: if a 4.1 TW energy system serving 1.4 billion people can grow while reducing emissions, then the argument that decarbonisation and economic growth are fundamentally incompatible becomes much harder to sustain. #Bettrification

Swiss farmers planted flowers between their crops and watched pest damage drop by over half. The UK is now running the same trial across 15 farms. The reason this works is embarrassingly simple.

A Swiss study on winter wheat found that fields with wildflower strips had 40 to 53% fewer leaf beetle pests than fields without. Crop damage dropped 61%.

The mechanism is simple. Wildflowers feed hoverflies, lacewings, parasitic wasps, ladybugs, and ground beetles. Those insects eat the aphids, beetle larvae, and caterpillars that farmers would otherwise spray for. A few meters of wildflowers hosts an unpaid pest control crew that would jump at the chance to whoop some aphid ass.

In apple orchards where no insecticides had been used for five years, plots with wildflower alleyways had 9.2% damaged fruit. Control plots without flowers had 32.5%.

The UK is now running a five-year trial across 15 farms placing 6-meter flower strips through the middle of fields, not just at the edges, because the beneficial insects can't reach the center of a large field otherwise.

This works the same way in a backyard vegetable garden as it does on a commercial farm. Plant native flowering species near your tomatoes, beans, and squash. The pests still show up, but the predators show up too.

Philadelphia, the birthplace of American independence, just called off its 250th birthday parade because it's too hot to march. Yesterday tied Philadelphia's all-time record of 103°F and with humidity, it feels like 118°F there right now, according to AccuWeather.

First, organizers shortened the route; then they moved up the start time before finally sending out the notice overnight. (Floats alone were allowed to drive down the street, and Historic District venues have stepped up and are hosting as many events indoors as they can.)

In DC, the Great American State Fair has closed until 5pm due to extreme heat.

Heat waves aren't new. But I'm a climate scientist, and I can tell you heat waves like this are virtually impossible without fossil fuel pollution.

Not only that, but when extreme weather hits, research shows that connecting it to climate change helps people understand why it matters.
