@KidCreole3 I like THE DROWNING POOL too, it's a good movie on its own merits; never saw HARPER. I think the Coens were planning on adapting one of the later novels but that always seemed like a terrible idea to me based on what I've seen from them, would require a very different sensibility

I should also say that I only stumbled upon JAN (and btw this is how you pronounce it, not like IMDb says) as I was reminded to do my long-neglected routine checks today after learning about @midnightmes's upcoming book on V-cinema (which looks fantastic)

@KidCreole3 OPHELIA (Chabrol, 1963) is great too. Don't forget to check out India, there are many famous adaptations of the tragedies – and I think at least nine of The Comedy of Errors (despite its cursed reputation I quite enjoy the latest one, the requisitely ultra-silly CIRKUS from 2022)

@KidCreole3 I've actually been investigating this quite a bit recently (on the programming team for a Shakespeare-themed festival). Would absolutely recommend THE REST IS SILENCE (Helmut Käutner, 1959) – for my money the best Hamlet (and "Hamlet Goes Business" 28 years before Kaurismäki!)...

Caught up with ROTER HIMMEL. It was OK, but truly cruel of them to put that copy of The Lamb Lies Down on Broadway so visibly there only to have something completely different on the turntable for the needledrop

I've been trying to follow the local reception as closely as I can (not knowing the language and not knowing anyone over there) and my impression so far is that the film is being surprisingly widely accepted, engaged with and discussed.
