Your life has seasons.

Each one is unique. Characterized by its own distinct desires, struggles, opportunities, and identity.

But one reflection I've had recently is just how easy it is to completely disassociate with the present season.

To give all your time and energy toward a longing for some nostalgic memory of a prior season or an anticipation for some beautiful state of a future season.

You look back at the past and all you see is sunshine. Because it all worked out. You forget (or glaze over) the struggle you endured. You're here today. You made it. You're alive. You're doing fine.

You look forward at the future and dream on what could be. You'll have so much more. More freedom. More purpose. More health. More deep connection. More everything.

The past is beautiful and the future feels limitless. So, logically, you slowly start to treat everything about the present as the bridge. A dash connecting your past and your future. A gap to be crossed as quickly as possible.

Everything you do today is in anticipation of some eventual end state.

I'm doing this now, so that I can have that later.

Unfortunately, the danger of that dissociation with the present is significant. You may spend your entire life living for a future that has a decidedly mirage-like property. You inch closer, but when it's right in front of you, it disappears and reappears on the horizon.

You may spend your entire life skipping through the present, deferring your presence, your joy, and your very humanity to a future that never comes.

In a classic French fable, a young boy is gifted with a magic ball of golden thread. He's told that if he simply pulls on the thread, time will leap forward. The catch, of course, is that once it's pulled, it can never be put back.

The young boy takes advantage of the newfound powers. Each time he's faced with a boring day at school, a frustrating set of chores, or a scolding from his parents, he pulls the thread, skipping through to the good parts.

As an adult, he continues, leaping through mundane struggles in his marriage, the friction of having a newborn, and the boredom at work. He finds himself pulling on the thread more and more, avoiding even the most minor inconveniences of his life.

But when he wakes up one day and sees an old man looking back at him in the mirror, he's filled with regret. He realizes in that moment that as he chose to skip through the boredom, struggles, and friction, so too did he miss the real texture of being alive.

How often do we all do the same? How easily do we default into this disassociation? Disconnecting from the present in anticipation of some future.

A mentor recently asked me this:

"Where are you going and why are you in such a rush?"

It hit me hard.

And to be honest, I haven't stopped replaying those words since he said them.

Why are you in such a rush?

The world wants you to rush into everything. Rushed decisions. Rushed conversations. Rushed relationships. Rushed timelines.

In doing so, you slowly relinquish your agency. You give up your claim on your own life. Surrender authorship to a pen that was never even yours.

In a world that wants you to rush, the ultimate act of rebellion is presence.

Be in the season you're in. Don't romanticize the past, don't fantasize the future. Be here. Be now. Be in this. All of its texture, depth, and struggle. All of its joy, tension, and pain. Sit with the uncertainty. Become friends with it. Fall in love with it.

Because every single thing you do today is something your younger self dreamed of and something your older self will wish they could go back and do.

The good old days are happening, right now.

And the next time you find yourself skipping through the present, remember these words:

El nuevo plan quinquenal del gobierno Chino dice que aumentarán la producción y el uso del carbón durante los próximos 5 años (ver artículo abajo). Nosotros también tenemos que aprovechar la riqueza carbonífera de Colombia, a la vez que desarrollamos fuentes limpias de generación eléctrica.

Hay que hacer TODO, para eliminar la pobreza, que es el peor problema que tenemos, incluso la principal causa de los daños ambientales.

Al mismo tiempo, como fuente de energía limpia, China continuará dándole una creciente importancia a la generación hidroeléctrica. En el plan quinquenal se plantea casi triplicar esta fuente de energía.

En Colombia lo que tenemos es lluvia y montañas (Colombia es el país más lluvioso del mundo). Entonces debemos aprovechar la riqueza hidroeléctrica. En la era de la IA que llega, con su enorme crecimiento en la demanda de energía, tenemos que aprovechar todos nuestras fuentes de energia: hidroeléctrica, eólica, solar , térmica, geotérmica.

China's new five-year plan for the energy sector prioritizes energy security and allows room for coal consumption to grow.

The plan strengthens coal's role as a backstop for the energy system and gives a green light to further growth in the coal-to-chemicals industry.

Experts view the plan's limits on fossil fuel expansion as relatively weak, with the goal of reducing coal use being a softer target than previously pledged.
China is leaving room for coal consumption to grow in coming years, as the stability of the world’s largest energy market continues to outweigh climate concerns.
“We will always prioritize energy security,” Wang Hongzhi, head of the National Energy Administration, said at a briefing on Friday to introduce the country’s new five-year plan for the sector, crediting the strategy for allowing China to successfully withstand the supply shock caused by the Iran War.
The new plan calls for strengthening coal’s role as backstop for the energy system. That includes enhancing coal resources in five existing production hubs, while allowing capacity to expand in central and eastern regions. Officials also gave a green light to further growth in the coal-to-chemicals industry.

Construction of new coal-fired power plants has boomed since a spate of electricity shortages in 2021 and 2022 as Beijing has touted the fuel’s role as a reliable back-up to intermittent renewables. China added 95 gigawatts of new thermal power capacity last year, the most since at least 2008, and requests for new permits in the first quarter of 2026 are ahead of last year’s record pace.

Meanwhile, the country’s coal-to-chemicals sector has grown rapidly in recent years, in part because the powerful mining lobby — heedful of the challenge from renewables in power generation — wanted to develop another source of demand for their product. Coal was given a further boost after the war in Iran pushed up prices of rival feedstocks such as naphtha and liquefied petroleum gas.

Softer Target

The new plan does put some limits on the expansion of fossil fuels, but experts view them as relatively weak, continuing a trend of China relying on clean energy to deliver bottom-up progress on emissions rather than enforcing tighter top-down controls.

The new road map reaffirmed the goal set in China’s overall five-year plan released in March, which called for coal consumption to reach a peak during the period. That’s a softer target than President Xi Jinping’s previous pledge to reduce coal use. The timeframe for completing the new dual carbon control system, which would include a cap on overall emissions, has also yet to be released.
While China’s direction of travel is toward lower emissions and eventual carbon neutrality, officials are signaling the journey will be slow and steady.

The goal of getting 50% of power from clean energy still allows fossil fuel generation to increase 10% over the period, according to the Center for Research on Energy and Clean Air. The new target on carbon intensity also leaves ample space for fossil fuels, which could be considered generous given that emissions from the power sector already fell last year.

“The headline targets are relatively conservative and should be read more as policy floors than as major new ambition,” said Qi Qin, a China analyst at CREA.

Storage Options

Coal development should be limited to the lowest level required, Wan Jinsong, the NEA’s deputy director, said at the briefing. The plan also calls for coal to be repositioned as a source of flexibility for the power system, rather than a base load, to better support renewables.

At the same time, the government is looking to other technologies to offer versatility. China will “vigorously develop new energy storage and other flexibility capabilities, and minimize dependence on fossil fuels as much as possible,” Wan said.
To that end, the plan raises the country’s target for pumped hydro capacity to around 160 GW, from 66 GW at the end of last year, with battery storage to reach 300 GW, from 136 GW.

“Flexibility is moving from a supporting function to core energy infrastructure,” said Kevin Tu, managing director of Agora Energy China.
