We have a major weakness in the system where panels are focused on seniority rather than knowledge, expertise and voice.

We often hear ‘we couldn’t find a woman for the panel’ while what we actually mean is ‘no woman was senior enough to be on the panel’

Panels are like a reward for partnership and they get diluted by our need to reward the senior most person with the ‘seat at the panel’ rather than asking who has the current knowledge, experience and expertise to bring a fresh perspective to the panel.

By focusing on seniority in an industry heavily led by men but served by women (global health workforce is female) we bring the perspectives of those in senior positions not those doing and experiencing the work day to day.

#manels will only end when we shift this mindset but ultimately when we achieve gender balance in leadership of Global Health @womeninGH @WomenDeliver @womenlifthealth @GlobalHlth5050 @WHO @devex @Amref_Worldwide
