The Survey of India, under the Department of Science and Technology, organised the National Workshop on Strengthening of Geospatial Ecosystem, themed “Geospatial Mission: An Enabler of Viksit Bharat”, on 17 December 2025 at Yashobhoomi, Dwarka, New Delhi, bringing together senior officials from Central and State Governments, experts from India and abroad, and representatives from industry, academia, and research institutions.
The workshop focused on strengthening India’s geospatial ecosystem in alignment with the National Geospatial Policy 2022 and the vision of Viksit Bharat 2047, highlighting geospatial information as a key enabler of governance, infrastructure development, and citizen-centric service delivery through a unified and interoperable national framework.
Hon’ble Dr. Jitendra Singh highlighted the role of geospatial technologies in nation-building, referring to the 2021 reforms, the National Geospatial Policy 2022, and the National Geospatial Mission, and released the Survey of India Coffee Table Book along with other dignitaries. Prof. Abhay Karandikar, Secretary, DST, emphasised geodetic modernisation and interoperability, while Sh. Hitesh Kumar Makwana, IAS, Surveyor General of India, highlighted SOI’s leadership in modernising the national geodetic framework and expanding CORS services.
The workshop featured four technical sessions covering geodetic modernisation, geospatial data and mapping infrastructure, national platforms such as NGDR and UGI, geospatial standards, and emerging technologies including AI, UAVs, LiDAR, and 3D mapping, along with an exhibition showcasing SOI’s key products and services.
The workshop reaffirmed the Government of India’s commitment to leveraging geospatial data and technologies as a strategic national asset for building a resilient and inclusive Viksit Bharat.

The Tamil Nadu, Puducherry and Andaman & Nicobar Islands Geo-spatial Directorate, Survey of India formally launched the Large-Scale Mapping (LSM) Project of Puducherry at Mahe on 14 November 2025, in the distinguished presence of the Hon’ble Lieutenant Governor of Puducherry, Shri Kailashanathan, IAS (Retd.).
The initiative marks a major step towards strengthening the Union Territory’s geospatial infrastructure. Using professional survey-grade drones, the project will generate high-resolution spatial datasets to support urban planning, land administration, infrastructure development, environmental monitoring, and evidence-based decision-making.
