When proposing an amendment, remember that the group is not voting on the main motion—only on changing the wording. If the amendment passes, debate continues on the newly-revised motion. If it fails, debate continues on the motion as it was stated before the proposed amendment.
The motion to amend is used to modify or change the wording of a main motion, resolution, or bylaw. Learn about the different types of motions to amend during Parliamentary Law Month. #ParliamentaryLawMonth#RobertsRules#Amend
• Tracy Treasurer wants to include juniors in the motion, so she waits to be recognized and says, “I move to amend the motion by striking out “a local high school senior” and inserting “local high school juniors and seniors”

How It's Used:
The membership is debating a motion and Vicky Vice notices that a member is speaking for the 3rd time in debate. She interrupts the member and says, “Madame President, I rise to a point of order. The member has already spoken twice in debate.”
A point of order is used to enforce the rules of the assembly. It is made when a member believes that a rule has been violated. Join PMNY during Parliamentary Law Month to learn how to use this motion effectively. #ParliamentaryLawMonth#RobertsRules#PointOfOrder
A member rises and seeks recognition.
The chair acknowledges the member.
The member makes a proposal.
Another member seconds it.
The chair repeats the motion and asks for discussion.
Members debate.
The chair repeats the motion, puts it to a vote, and announces the result.
The main motion is the most common type of motion used in parliamentary procedure. It is used to introduce a new item of business before the assembly. Join PMNY during Parliamentary Law Month to learn more. #ParliamentaryLawMonth#RobertsRules#MainMotion
Happy Parliamentary Law Month! Let's celebrate the rules and procedures that keep meetings and assemblies organized and efficient. #ParliamentaryLawMonth#RONR
