There is a bit of a misconception with this one ahaha, but hopefully I'll be able to clarify it \o/, love to see more FF14 enjoyers ahaha. It's actually my main game that I play and roughly at around 1200+ hours in total approximate hours. Been playing since late Stormblood around when Shadowbringers was announced/trailer of it). This is stuff from what I remembered with FF14 currently.

The good thing is that if you never played FF14 (as in zero gameplay), you actually have access to an unlimited free trial with no timer up to Stormblood for the cost of 0 dollars. Some limitations of course such as not be able to use the marketboard, but for the most part you can definitely play the game for free, in the assumption that you don't buy the game fully though. Some time later at the end of the year, the expansion Shadowbringers will be part of the free access.

In some comparison I guess it would be.... think of it as like a DOA core fighters, you'll have access to 3 characters or something (which the equivalent would be 3 free expansions. A Realm Reborn, Heavensward, Stormblood.). To access the rest, you would have to pay for the game and then it turns on a subscription.

If you bought the starter game, you have a 30-day free subscription access until they charge you the month after. If you bought the 'entire game+all DLC expansions', you lose access to the unlimited free trial since that would be under the expectation that you are going to commit.

The most important thing is that you have to make sure you never played the game at all to access it I believe. However FF14 has quite a ton in the community who are free-to-play players who mod the game, so if that's up your alley then FF14 is pretty huge with it. I have 2 friends that are still on free trial and all they do is mod the game.

Instead of patching Street Fighter 2 they re-released basically the same game over 10 times with minor updates at full price - and we never stopped buying them. I'm not a DLC fan, but this was the ONE title that needed it.

The character DLC is what keeps the game alive and makes it so we don’t have to buy a full game.

You are intentionally missing the point that this is the better alternative than being charged full price game for new characters. Dev time is not lost creating meaningless content to justify the price. You are also coming add on characters to initial releases.

This is ALWAYS the better alternative than being resold the game on each revision.

While we are on the hot topic of video game preservation:

Never trade games to GameStop.
Their horrible Field Destroy policies are responsible for a huge chunk of what we already lost.
They sell retro now, sure, but nothing can bring back what they already destroyed.
