🚨 A Patna consumer court has imposed a fine of Rs 85,000 on Cinepolis Cinema and the Coca-Cola Company for stopping a moviegoer from carrying his own water bottle inside the theatre and forcing him to buy packaged water at a high price.
When I first met him, out of awe and awkwardness I fiddled with my hair. He slapped my hand away and said 'hero ki tarah Baal mat bana...tu actor hai'!
He didn't flatter you. He didn't tell you what you wanted to hear. He told you what you needed to hear. That was Nana. Straightforward. Rough, honest and had the most beautiful smile.
He always had a strange way of showing affection. He would shout at you first, and then somewhere between the third or fourth insult, you realised you were being hugged. He loved me and I loved him back.
He was a mentor, a teacher, a critic and a friend who beat me and everyone else around him in carrom game after game and relished his victories.
Nana your intensity, laughter , madness and love will always stay with us. I just wish we had time to have more conversations, another argument, another cup of tea and a game of carrom.
You have left a void not only in the world of cinema but in the hearts of all Indians and the world. All I can say is, I will miss you dearly and carry your words in my heart till the end of time....'hero banne ke chakar mein actor mat khona'
May your soul rest in peace Nana and Allah bless you. The Heavens will be blessed to have you... a masterful actor and an unbeatable carrom champion. Love you and miss you dearly!! Too soon my Hero Actor! RIP.
Congratulations to Francis Halzen on the 2026 Nobel Prize in Physics, for IceCube and the discovery of high energy neutrinos from space. 👏👏
One man in his story was born in Ahmedabad :))
Gaurang Yodh born in 1928. BSc from Bombay University, 1948. Then Chicago, in the group of Enrico Fermi and Herbert Anderson. PhD in 1955. Then a postdoc at Stanford.
In 1956 he came back to India. He joined TIFR. He wanted to build an accelerator-based particle physics programme here.
The timing was not right for the investment he needed. In 1958 he went back to the US.
He kept working on particles from space. In 1972, with TIFR's Yash Pal and James Trefil, he published cosmic-ray evidence that proton collisions get stronger at higher energy.
Later CERN confirmed it...
Yodh worked with Francis Halzen and Steve Barwick to kick-start AMANDA, the detector in the South Pole ice that led to IceCube. In 1996 Halzen, Yodh and Todor Stanev published a paper working out how AMANDA could study gamma rays through the muons they produce.
Yodh died on 3 June 2019. On 25 July 2019, his daughter Jaya presented Francis Halzen with the Yodh Prize in Madison. Gaurang and his wife Kanwal had set that prize up in 1998.
P.S. In 1956, Yodh recorded one of the earliest sitar albums in the US.
Nations do not acquire compassion with wealth. It is hardly a luxury acquired with better living standards. It is intrinsic to you as a person, rich or poor. Why wear an expression of patronising surprise when a relatively poorer country than yours, effectively conserves and preserves its precious wildlife? The measure of moral imagination is not per capita income. #WildlifeProtection @TheEconomist
No matter where I am, a part of me is always stuck at 1, Ashoka Road on Sundays.
Miss the crowd, that taste, and company of brilliant friends on this granite table.
Ah! Delhi. ♥️
And as Carl Jung said, no matter how isolated you are and how lonely you feel, if you do your work truly and conscientiously, unknown friends will come and seek you.
Sweden with just one crore+ population has produced AB Bofors, Saab, Scania,
Volvo, Ericsson, Electrolux, Spotify, Skype, Ikea, H&M as global brands, how did they do it?
Chilling out during WW2 helped? Or something more also?
This book is written by a former Indian Foreign Service (IFS) officer of the 1949 batch, who served as Foreign Secretary to the Government of India from 1982 to 1985. Remarkably, the author wrote this book at the age of 92, bringing to it the perspective of a long
My first reaction on seeing this was: AI.
My second reaction, after checking: Good grief. It’s real.
This is the Chambal Riverfront in Kota.
For most of us, the name Kota probably brings to mind its huge coaching industry. And, sadly, the controversies around the intense pressure on students there.
But this is a side of Kota I had absolutely no idea existed.
2.75 km along both banks of the Chambal. Ghats, promenades, fountains and some fairly spectacular public spaces.
And apparently I’m not the only one who hasn’t discovered it. The riverfront is reportedly attracting only around 1,000 visitors a day.
Why haven’t we heard more about it?
Credit to Shanti Dhariwal, then Rajasthan’s Urban Development Minister, who drove the project, the Kota Urban Improvement Trust and architect Anoop Bartaria.
Judging from these images, it certainly deserves to be better known.
Kota just went on my Wanderer list.
Anyone been there? Does the reality live up to the pictures?
