Teetering on the brink of financial collapse with £21 billion in debt, Thames Water has just handed a £1 million signing-on fee to its finance chief, Steve Buck.

Where did the money come from? It was drawn directly from an emergency borrowing facility provided by lenders trying to keep the utility solvent.

Let that sink in. A company carrying £21 billion in debt, warning that its cash reserves will run dry by the end of the year, borrowed money at crisis rates to pay a seven-figure sum to an executive who joined only 15 months ago.

This is not a business in distress. It is an extraction mechanism operating at peak efficiency.

While Thames Water negotiates smaller retention payouts for 14 other executives, chief executive Chris Weston saw his total pay package climb past £1 million last year. Meanwhile, raw sewage continues to pour into our rivers and service standards remain in the gutter.

The board claims contractual obligations forced their hand. But why are boardroom contracts treated as sacred scripture while the contract with the public to provide clean water is broken daily?

It is time to end the farce. The government must place Thames Water into a Special Administration Regime immediately, wipe out speculative equity, and bring our water back into public hands where it belongs.

When the boardroom treats insolvency as a bonus scheme and emergency loans as a payroll facility, that is not a business in distress; it is a crime scene with a corporate logo.

Hi @andyburnham I spoke today to a friend whose father had Alzheimer’s. He told me that last year the council was paying around £900 a week for carers to visit four times a day, providing a combined total of about two hours of care per day.

That works out at approximately £64 per hour of delivered care to the agency.

While many care workers providing the actual visits are paid around £16 per hour.

For comparison, an experienced NHS Band 6 nurse earns around £20 per hour.

Why are taxpayers paying such high rates to private care providers when the frontline workers themselves receive a much smaller proportion of the cost?

Would a publicly provided model, with qualified nurses and care workers employed directly by the NHS or local authorities, provide better value and more consistent support, rather than relying on care agencies that often deliver short, offer fragmented visits, charge a fortune, and make extortionate profits?

In the 26 companies that operate a third of all of the care homes in this country, 200 MILLION pounds leaks out of that sector in the form of management fees for private investors. That's an astronomical sum that is not going to improving care or paying workers a fair wage, but is instead lining the pockets of wealth investors, often from overseas.

Social care is not a cash cow. It is a critical public service, limping along as its lifeblood is drained by private interests. Getting profiteers out of care is not a nice-to-have measure. It is a crucial starting point that any meaningful reform of the sector must build from.
