The discovery at the end of the year of a sword found next to a skeleton in a cemetery in Kent, England, remains highly confidential. The location is being kept secret for security reasons, the exact location will not be revealed until the end of the excavations.

The tomb in which it was found is part of an extraordinarily rich early medieval cemetery, dating back to the 5th-6th Centuries AD. A ring was found on the ancient sword, probably a symbol of union. The hilt, made of gold and silver, has an elaborate decorative motif, while the blade bears runic inscriptions, probably connected to symbols of power or protection.

The exceptional preservation of the artefact also includes elements of the scabbard, made of leather and wood and lined internally with beaver fur. The weapon, found near Canterbury, Kent, is described by archaeologists as one of the most extraordinary artefacts ever found in England.

The exceptional state of preservation of the finds has allowed archaeologists to gather previously unpublished information on Anglo-Saxon funerary practices.

Lower Boscaswell Fogou in West Cornwall - UK 🇬🇧

This ruinous above-ground fougou in the far west of Cornwall is covered by a large overgrown earth and stone bank. All that remains of the main passage is a stretch just over 2 metres long with height and width each about 1.8 metres. The passage opens to the west and the chamber is still covered by two large capstones. A roofed 1.48 metre long creep passage opens off to the south-west.

Early Iron Age to Romano British - 800 BC to 409 AD in date

In 1992 the fogou was visited by McNeil Cooke who summarised the history of the investigations. He reported that during the 18th century, work near to the fogou, uncovered a Roman hoard. The hoard consisted of a hundred coins of Antonius Pius (Emperor from 138-161 AD), all of which have since been lost.
