The EU has a once-in-a-generation chance to deliver on a bold new measure with the potential to vastly improve life for scores of startup founders, operators and investors.
But Europe risks Europe-ing itself out of the opportunity.

Over the past months I’ve increasingly encountered questions about “Europe’s decline in tech”. I wanted to share my response to these questions here. While I am realistic about Europe's modest past success, and that there are no trillion dollar companies, I am optimistic about its future. In fact, I "put my money where my mouth is" and chose to bet my career on it – I have been doing venture on the continent for over a decade instead of moving to Silicon Valley.
Here are some of my thoughts on the topic.
🔥 The President of the European Commission, Ursula von der Leyen, announces she wants to propose a so-called 28th regime for startups, aka an EU Inc. 💪
@vonderleyen wants to see innovative startups scale all across the huge single market of the EU! 🇪🇺🚀
Congratulations to @SpaceX, what an incredible feat of engineering! Mars, here we come.
At the same time, the coin has a second side: it shows and confirms that #Europe has completely lost touch. Can it still catch up? No chance. At least not the way things are going at the moment.
Europe has ambitious private space players. With innovative ideas, courage and a vision. Unfortunately, they are being held by the long arm and are in danger of withering away while old structures, processes and mindsets are maintained.
What we need immediately and systematically are state anchor customers, substantial investment, and a framework that allows and promotes unbureaucratic, fast and risk-taking development.
Otherwise, Europe will quickly sink into insignificance when it comes to the exploration of space, its resources and its potential. And we leave it to the rest of the world to make history. Just like #SpaceX did yesterday.
It is up to Europe, up to us.

We got RIGHT NOW a once in a generation chance to improve Europe for startups. 🔥
We got 6 weeks until the new comission sets their work agenda for the years to come. Uniting the European startup ecosystems needs to be part of this agenda!
The solution is known, it's just one out of hundreds for politicians. It's our job as industry to show how important it is.
First co-signatories are people like @patrickc, @nzennstrom, @martinmignot, @MattClifford, @Taavet, Eléonore Crespo, @jobvo, @roxannevarza and many many more coming in the next weeks. Hopefully including you! ✌️

For Europe, for the next generations to come: Let's make Europe the best place for innovators.
Uniting as one ecosystem is the first step - a pan-european ecosystem is the key here. Let's go!
Got a ton of questions related to this the last days:
🇪🇺 eu/acc Recap:
1) Yes this is true, Mario reached out to Peter
This is by itself epic
2) Mario Draghi's report has been a long time coming
A bunch of us send several suggestions beforehand to his team.
I personally didn't expect them to be this honest, direct and full-force with critique and recommendations
3) A centralized entities for the EU isn't a new idea by us.
There have been multiple full-blown projects in the last 20 years to make this happen, even Mario Draghi pitched this a few times in the past.
The difference now is that there is a real political will to make it happen
4) An EU inc is needed as fundament/platform and it's not a done conclusion
It's less than 1% in his report.
Entity via 28th regime is such an old idea that it's basically a meme in Brussels
Plus the EC historically has more SMEs in mind and based on the current recommendations might make this too complex.
5) TLDR: There is still work to be done
I am currently working with a few freaks on a very exciting project in this area - can showcase early october.
We can improve Europe for Startups.
Less complaining. More doing.

Ok today's live-stream will be bonkers.
As some of you know we picked the worst summer hobby ever: Seeing if we can improve Europe for Startups
The problem: At least I have no clue how.
So, I invited a few guests today who do know:
Members of Parlaments, the egov innovators in Europe and Europe's largest Startup lobby group.
Here the plan - we start at 6pm CET (in 30mins):
1) We talk to @d_boeselager a Member of the European Parliament about the role of the European Parliament and esp next week's election.
How it works, why it's important, where to learn more about the parties you can vote! This will be not about his party but the system as a whole. Everyone should vote for whom they think is right.
2) Then we talk to the lead of the largest European Startup Assocation @clarksp about how lobbying for startups works in Europe
3) We talk to the ex CIO of Estonia @luukasilves and @seikatsu if there are short-term hacks we can pull off with the help of individual countries.
As said - we start as always at 6pm CET (so in 30mins)

In 2008 there was an initiative to create a shared limited-liability entity in Europe.
The SPE's ("Societas privata Europaea")
- 1 EUR min capital
- No Notary
- Single set of rules across the EU
- Management and registration in different countries
It was killed by a german party called CDU to avoid competention with the mini-GMBH
I cannot express how pissed I am about this.
We could have had our delaware-like EU-inc in 2008 but european founders got f**ked over by local politicians and local agendas.
Good rule to keep in mind:
Any politician saying they are for European startups but not pushing for EU-wide shared legal standards is hypocritical and just thinking of their own local political power.

Here what happened since 2008:
New post.
I tried to summarize my POV on Europe.
More importantly, i share share two small suggestions that, as a first step, could bring us back on track.

We often use a technique called prompt routing to better optimize prompts for particular use cases, while increasing cost-effectiveness and improving performance. Read more about what it is and how it works here: https://t.co/EPQRVBkUUB
