The monk show showed me also told me the story of how they were protected and brought across the Himalayas.

Her foreign opponents fixated on #SheikhHasina through a narrow lens: elections that didn’t meet Western democratic aesthetics, long incumbency, centralised power, human rights reports. All real issues, but treated in isolation, stripped of context. Bangladesh was judged as if it were Denmark with a turnout problem, not a fragile, densely packed state with a violent Islamist history and a traumatised political culture.

In doing so, three hard realities were ignored.

First, Hasina was a stabiliser, not a revolutionary hero, but a state-builder in a hostile environment. She kept Jamaat and its offshoots contained, maintained civil-military balance, protected minorities better than any realistic alternative, and kept Bangladesh economically and geopolitically predictable. Her western opponents knew this. They just chose to downplay it.

Second, they overestimated the “democratic opposition”. There was no credible, unified, liberal alternative waiting in the wings. Removing pressure from Hasina didn’t empower democrats. It empowered street power, radicals, and actors who thrive precisely when institutions weaken.

Third, there was the old habit of believing that toppling or delegitimising a strong incumbent automatically opens space for pluralism. History says the opposite. In divided societies, power vacuums don’t fill with moderates. They fill with the loudest, angriest, and most organised forces. Often religious, often violent.

These were destructive missteps. Not because Hasina was flawless, but because state collapse is always worse than imperfect order. Chasing democratic optics ended up accelerating a counterrevolution that hollowed out politics, normalised persecution, and destabilised an entire country.

This wasn’t values-driven paternalism . It was context-blind activism masquerading as strategy. And Bangladesh will pay for it long after the policy memos have been forgotten.

Yesterday at Delhi’s Kamani Auditorium, hearing Pandit Hariprasad Chaurasia’s flute left me heartbroken. He can no longer truly play. His hands tremble; the flute will not stay steady. He blows into it with immense effort, yet no music emerges.
The blame lies with the organizers. It was cruel to subject him to such physical and emotional pain. Panditji must have suffered—struggling to blow, to hold the flute, and to hear its faltering sound. The audience too shared his agony, watching his helplessness.
If they felt compelled to bring him before the public, they should have seated him on a beautifully adorned stage while those soul-stirring recordings of his flute played in the background. The audience would have been enchanted by the music and moved by the sight of its creator.
When I met him only a few months ago, he spoke with such grace and warmth. And just a few years earlier, on this very stage at Kamani, he performed alongside Shivkumar Sharma—a concert of sheer perfection.
Ah, how cruel the weight of age can be.

Ancient Hindu Idols Found in Kashmir.

Local labourers have unearthed ancient Hindu idols, including 11 Shivlings, during the renovation of a spring at Karkoot Nag in the Salia area of Anantnag district’s Aishmuqam in South Kashmir. The discovery was made during clearing a section of the spring.

As the water level had receded in recent months, the workers uncovered a small compartment-like stone structure inside the spring, where the idols had apparently been placed and preserved underwater.

The Portuguese would use them for target practice ! Whatever the Islamic invaders missed out during their pan-India temple destruction campaigns, the Christian invaders made it up by vandalising them in other different ways.

While Elephanta caves bullet practice is historically known, the Bhaja caves destruction is not known. These images were left out from public viewing and never discussed as to why they have these rampant circular grooves all over them!
