“The only way to understand a mechanism is by studying the mistakes that it makes. Error isn’t merely instructive; it is the key that might unlock the deep nature of the mechanism”

Seeing a lot of coordinated PR for Jean Drèze lately as he came out from his hibernation. Having spent years in international & development finance, I have met some of the sharpest minds in the field: sovereign negotiators, project financiers, central bankers and builders of real enterprises. One lesson is stone truth. Socialist economics survives not on evidence but on sentiment and on the comfort of never having to deliver anything. In India, that sentiment wears a jhola, celebrates scarcity as virtue & mistakes performative compassion for some great policy. It has made mediocrity respectable & us averse to higher ambitions in life. Jean Drèze is decorated practitioner of this mediocre game and his influence deserves scrutiny.
Extremely poor from President Musk, who ensured BYD didn’t enter the US for fear of his Tesla sales crumbling . And here making an issue out of our right for national security. A great entrepreneur but a v bitter man. Earlier went after Trump claiming his name is in Epstein files only to calm down later to ensure his business doesn’t suffer. Lol Musk.
Musk playing foul games !!!
Can’t think of a scenario where Starlink is good for Indian national interests in the long term.
I suspect he is under pressure to maintain pumped up SpaceX stock
India should build its own starlink - who better than Mukesh Bhai
Dear Prime Minister Ambani,
Please accept my humble apologies for not realizing that you are the real boss of India.
Naturally, you would prefer to maintain your monopolistic exploitation of the great people of India, but would you nonetheless consider allowing Starlink to compete?
There are many areas of India, as there are in all countries, with no Internet access, which denies children the opportunity for education and for small businesses the opportunity to sell their goods to a global market. Starlink would change their lives for the better.
Thank you 🙏
Imagine how Hindu texts are attributed
We are a v v v anti-individualist culture. Tradition is supreme. Ego is bad.
We see reverse plagiarism w.r.t. Hindu texts..
E.g. A brahmin will write a great work (say a large purANa) and attribute it to the primordial vedavyAsa.
This is the Hindu way. Always attribute all great things to "tradition". Not to a flesh and blood person
The opportunity is pretty large in India as well.
I think there’s 10-15 Bn $ of impulse / unplanned buying in India, mainly serviced by the local hardware shops
Well…Home Depot did ~80 Bn $ of sales to Pro Contractors last year
Out of which 80%+ is impulse buys / unplanned inventory replenishment
The bulk orders for building materials are bought through McCaster Carr or one of the giant whole sale distributors
Home Depot is the OG Q-Comm for building products / construction materials
Impulse buys / unplanned inventory replenishment by pro contractors is 70 Bn $ of annual sales at 15% Ops margin
Even more interesting is that - higher ticket size 1000$+ AOV bucket is the fastest growing category for HD in the pro contractor biz
They’ve been doing direct delivery to the job site from Amazon type fulfilment centres - 90% of deliveries are same day
@1shankarsharma calm down man … you didn’t discover relativity
Your view was a pretty obvious, off handed take - much discussed and debated over the years
Massive Point of View thievery again:
Since my interview on NDTV where I gave the Kapil Dev analogy of how Indian IT services companies cannot be blamed for not doing AI just as Kapil could not be blamed for not getting runs (because he always claimed to be a fast bowler): The blame has to fall on the other thousands of companies and entrepreneurs in India who did nothing except sit on their butts, waiting for the 4-5 IT giants to lead all tech revolutions. Imo, Indian IT services companies delivered on their original promise massively and that's where the matter should end. Somebody else should have taken the baton. But people chose to make food delivery, ride healing apps, f&o apps.
Since that day last week, there are now plenty of social media commentaries, articles and posts, copy pasting pretty my view, defending IT services companies. Without any attribution, of course 😂
One such post was even complimented by Kris Gopalakrishnan😊!
Long live the Low IPR country!!
What does it take to build a global brand from the ground up—and stay focused while the world pulls you in every direction?
In this episode of the “What Works and Why” podcast, Jairam Varadaraj joins host Praseed Jagannathan for a wide-ranging conversation on the making of ELGi.
From product focus and engineering capability to building distribution and service networks across global markets, Dr. Jairam reflects on the deliberate choices—made over decades—that shaped ELGi into the brand it is today. Along the way, he makes a compelling case for why focus, not fragmentation, sustains businesses aiming for long-term growth.
A candid look at the thinking behind the company—the how, the what, and the why.
