We thank our media friends for the overwhelming coverage of the CARDIO India launch.
The project is a five-year, NIHR (National Institute for Health and Care Research)-funded cluster-randomised trial co-led by the @uniofleicester and the @INDIACCDC, alongside @Helpageindia and @aiims_newdelhi. During this period, it will deploy 48 Mobile Health Units across 10+ states, from Bihar to Tamil Nadu. It intends to pioneer AI-enabled diagnostics, assisted telemedicine, and computerised clinical decision support to deliver doorstep CVD risk management for 2,000 underserved elderly, building on the National Health Mission's 1,477 MMUs operational as of June 2025.
We hope that with every such media coverage, CARDIO India's impact reaches every deserving corner of India.

India is at a demographic crossroads. By 2036, our elderly population is projected to surge to 230 million, and by 2050, the number of seniors will outpace children. With cardiovascular diseases (CVDs) already claiming nearly 30% of all deaths, and a significant access gap for rural populations, the need for a systemic shift in healthcare delivery has never been more urgent.
At the @INDIACCDC, we are proud to co-lead CARDIO-India, a landmark £5 million NIHR-funded, five-year cluster randomised trial in partnership with the @uniofleicester, @Helpageindia, and @aiims_newdelhi. Through its Mobile Health Units (MHUs) deployed across 10+ states, CARDIO-India is bringing specialist-level care directly to the doorsteps of the underserved in rural India.

On World Oral Health Day, insights from ongoing doctoral research by Dr Ishita Gupta, Assistant Director cum Research Scientist at @INDIACCDC, highlight key gaps.
She conducted formative research in two rural communities in North and South India. Through interviews with ten healthcare providers and over 25 community members, the study explores provider perspectives and the lived experiences, awareness and practices of rural populations when it comes to oral health.
These findings are especially relevant in the Indian context, where nearly 46.6% of the population is affected by oral diseases, according to the International Journal of Community Medicine and Public Health (2026). With clear links between oral health and chronic conditions, it’s time we start treating oral health as essential, not optional.
Let’s start the conversation today.

Prof. Jagat Narula MD PhD, President, @worldheartfed (World Heart Federation), delivers the keynote “Ageing and CVD: What you sow, so shall you reap…”, highlighting that cardiovascular health in later life is shaped by choices, care, and policy across the life course.
His key message: investing in cardiovascular prevention today determines how we age tomorrow. CARDIO-India aims to translate this evidence into scalable action for older adults in India.

Key insights emerging from Panel 4 on “Healthy Ageing and Longevity – The Road Ahead”, chaired by Prof. Nikhil Tandon, highlight the priorities shaping India’s longevity agenda.
Speakers emphasised the need for precision prevention, stronger dementia care, and expanded palliative and long-term care systems to support healthier and more dignified ageing. The discussion also underscored the importance of prioritising women’s health, recognising that women form a growing share of India’s ageing population and often face unique health and social challenges.
Together, these priorities point toward a more comprehensive and inclusive approach to healthy ageing in the years ahead.
