Over the past few days, a viral video has been circulating involving a lecturer who was alleged to have attempted an immoral relationship with a married woman. In many of the posts and comments, he has been repeatedly described as a MAAUN lecturer, and unfortunately, many people have used that to attack the university without first verifying the facts.

I initially had no intention of commenting on the issue because I believe every allegation deserves a fair investigation. However, the level of misinformation being spread has made it necessary to put some facts on record.

Firstly, the individual in question was a visiting lecturer in MAAUN, not a permanent one. His primary appointment is with Northwest University Kano. At MAAUN, he only served as a visiting lecturer on a fixed-term contract.

Secondly, By the time this incident allegedly occurred, he was no longer affiliated with MAAUN. His application for renewal was officially declined, and his visiting appointment expired in May 2026. The incident went viral in July 2026, more than two months after his contract had ended. Below are copies of his application requesting the renewal of his contract and the university’s official response declining the request (about 2months ago)

Thirdly, The claim that he delayed a married postgraduate student for two years is inconsistent with the university’s academic timeline.
MAAUN has not yet commenced postgraduate programmes. The university is only preparing to begin them. Also, since the establishment of MAAUN, there has not been a case of a student being kept from graduating two years beyond the normal duration of their programme because a lecturer refused to approve a project.

As a student of the university, Let me be very clear, MAAUN has one of the most strict zero-tolerance policy against sexual harassment and lecturer-student relationships. And the management takes it very seriously. In MAAUN if any lecturer is found to be involved in an inappropriate relationship with a student and the allegation is backed by credible evidence through the proper process, the lecturer faces dismissal while the student who exposed it receives ₦5 million, and all of us, the students are aware of the university’s reward system for exposing such misconduct. These policies exist because MAAUN wants such behaviour exposed and punished, and also encourages people to speak up.

The annoying part of this case is that, how could One person’s alleged actions can define an entire institution. MAAUN is a home to thousands of students and staff who work hard every day. It is unfair to label the university with derogatory names or call for its licence to be revoked because of allegations involving one individual, especially someone who was no longer under contract with the university. Besides that, God forbid that such an immoral act ever happened at MAAUN. Incidents like these have unfortunately existed in tertiary institutions long before MAAUN was even established. It is not something unique to MAAUN.

If anyone has committed wrongdoing, the law and the appropriate authorities should take their course. But the reputation of an entire institution should be judged on verified facts, not rumours or misinformation.

This is a message he never fails to repeat to us at every MAAUN gathering, whether it’s a matriculation ceremony, dinner, convocation, official programme, or any other university event. His position has always been clear and consistent “MAAUN has zero tolerance for sexual harassment, misconduct, or any act that undermines the institution’s values.”
