@bubbling_creek @SRamirez68083 I'm also way more optimistic about watermarks on images and video than text, since they can be extremely subtle (to the point you don't know they're there). You'd just need some way to make them hard to "manually" synthesize.

@eigenrobot I think the heroes correspond (roughly) to inhabitants of England: Elves are Celts, Rohan is Anglo-Saxon, Gondor is Roman/Byzantine, Hobbits are Welsh/Scottish/English (by family), Dwarves are Norse/Jewish. Orcs are Germanic Huns sacking Rome or Turks attacking Constantinople...

@littmath Suppose an unfair coin (P_heads = 0.51). Alice and Bob both flip it a billion times. Alice reports all heads, Bob reports a specific sequence TTTTHTTHT... w/ roughly 51% heads.

Even with higher likelihood, Alice is probably still lying.

@wisdomandlore @flglmn This is even more ironic because Tolkien himself wrote many contradictory accounts of his own universe, which then had to be reconciled (i.e. by his son) to be published, thereby adding even more verisimilitude to Tolkien's goal of simulating a historical/mythological epic.
