Self-taught US artist Edward Gordon conveys light effects with a crystalline clarity, and enjoys paying homage to the masters. Here’s his ‘Wind from the Sea’ (see Vermeer’s ‘The Astronomer’ on the wall?) and at R is Andrew Wyeth’s same-named work
Artists rarely paint views from studios other than their own. In this work from 1807 by the German landscape painter Carl Ludwig Kaaz the view through an open window, without any figures was rare for an oil painting at the time.
things i, an american, have learned from europeans on twitter about my own country that are news to me:
-we don’t go outside
-we don’t have humidity
-the whole country is a desert
-we don’t have bakeries
-we don’t have passports
-we say “parsta”
-we don’t have produce in our grocery stores
-we don’t have bread
-we can’t hang our clothes outside to dry
-there is more biodiversity in belgium than the entire US (lol)
-we can’t walk outside
what am i missing ?
The red-orange head of a male Western Tanager is hard to miss. They tend to stick to the conifers, and those dark green needles create the perfect background to show off their bright colors. #birds#nature#wildlife
@thomasforth Classical Liberalism = freedom for (doing what you want).
US politico-economic Liberalism = freedom from (hunger etc).
US politico-econ Conservatives and Libertarians = adopted a renewed emphasis on freedom for.
That was a good thing they did on the #WillTrent episode “We’re Looking for a Vampire” - showing how to administer Narcan to someone experiencing a drug overdose. (Also very good growth in character relationships.)
My heart is full of things that I can’t own. My babies smiles, last nights sunset, the taste of my favorite wine, the smell of tea olives, an owls hoot late at night, the sound of a distant train, the touch of my mother…
This place is the only national park besides the Grand Canyon that I just stood in awe and couldn’t comprehend. Every other place I have visited I thought “yep, looks like the pictures.” Not this one. Your eyes can’t reconcile their enormity until you see someone standing on the other side, even then, it doesn’t quite compute.
The mysterious Paris photographer
When France fell in June 1940, Paris came under German military control and the Swastika replaced the Tricolour flag of the former French republic.
Someone took a camera and snapped forbidden photos of the occupier, writing sarcastic texts on the back of the photos.
Then, in 2020, an album containing 370 of these photos was purchased at a flea market in southern France.
Nobody knew who the photographer was....
