A 70 year old who says that to a 23 year old who had made a poor choice at the age of 16, who'd then been fast-tracked through life-changing medical interventions by adults and who is now paying the health consequences of those events CANNOT POSSIBLY BE a content person by any stretch of the imagination.

Arguably, any mature adult telling a very young person that they're a failure - for any reason whatsoever, but especially for mistakes made in their teen years - has serious issues of their own that they should be dealing with.

In my life I have met thousands of transgender people. Many of them are some of the most thoughtful, creative and resilient people I know. Literally my favourite people. Like every community there are also a few difficult personalities, often people carrying a lot of pain or self-loathing who sometimes take that anger out on others. I could say this about gay and lesbian people too.

But the reality is that most trans people are simply trying to live their lives with dignity and honesty.

What I do struggle to understand is the level of hostility directed at them. When people insist that trans people are “confused” or “crazy” while ignoring the science, the history and the lived reality of millions of people, it starts to look less like confusion and more like prejudice.

Maybe the real problem is not identity at all. Maybe your problem is hatred.
