TINUBU’S N1TRILLION BRIBE IN 2024 BUDGET TEARING NATIONAL ASSEMBLY MEMBERS APART
A N1trillion padded into the 2024 Budget by Bola Tinubu as bribe to the leaderships and members of the National Assembly to accelerate the passage of the money bill, is the reason lawmakers are now at daggers drawn.
From the padded N1trillion, Senate President Godswill Akpabio collected N125billion worth of projects, Speaker Tajudeen Abass, N120billion. The Senate Leader, Bamidele Opeyemi and the Senate Appropriation Committee Chairman, Solomon Olamilekan, got N100billion each. The House Leader, Joseph Ihonvbere and the Appropriations Chairman, Abubakar Bichi, got N90billion respectively.
The sharing formula has now left other members of the National Assembly feeling like they are being treated as “Almajiris”, and vowing to expose all.
Senator Ali Ndume had told Seun Okinbaloye that lawmakers are not equal and so sharing formula cannot be same.
Senator Abdul Ningi has been suspended for three months for alleging padding of the 2024 budget to the tune of N3.7tn by the Senate. Ningi’s allegation is a prelude to the crisis ahead in the National Assembly.
On 29 November 2023, President Bola Tinubu presented the N27.5 trillion budget to the joint session of the National Assembly. The budget has a recurrent expenditure profile of N9.92 trillion, a capital expenditure component of N8.7 trillion while N8.25 trillion was set aside for debt servicing.
The two arms of the National Assembly led by Senator Akpabio and Abass, passed the 2024 appropriation bill and increased its size from N27.5 trillion proposed by Tinubu to N28.7 trillion. The budget size was increased by N1.2 trillion.
