Padma Shri Chewang Norphel, fondly known as the "Ice Man of India," is one of Ladakh's greatest sons and an engineer whose work transformed water conservation in the high Himalayas.

Long before climate adaptation became a global priority, Chewang Norphel pioneered the concept of artificial glaciers to store winter water for use during the spring sowing season. Over his lifetime, he built more than 15 artificial glaciers, developed over 300 irrigation canals, and constructed numerous bridges and irrigation systems, helping bring water to nearly 20,000 acres of land across Ladakh.

What makes his legacy remarkable is not only the scale of his engineering achievements but also his quiet dedication to public service. He spent decades improving the lives of remote communities without seeking publicity or personal recognition.

His contributions have earned widespread recognition:

- 2010: Jamnalal Bajaj Award for the Application of Science and Technology for Rural Development.
- 2011: Recognition from the United Nations Development Programme (UNDP) for his pioneering work.
- 2015: Awarded the Padma Shri, one of India's highest civilian honours.

His inspiring journey has also been documented in the film "White Knight," which highlights his extraordinary ecological contributions and lifelong commitment to the people of Ladakh.
