Look at who is panicking about Makerfield and you’ll understand its importance: Labour strategists admitting the seat “could be lost” if Reform repeats its local election result, cabinet ministers urging rivals not to run if Burnham sneaks in, and Nigel Farage openly promising to “throw absolutely everything” at the contest.

This is not a routine by‑election; it is the junction where three paths meet – Starmer clinging on after historic local defeats, Burnham plotting a coronation that dodges a general election, and Reform turning protest votes into a parliamentary breakthrough that shatters the old duopoly.

If Labour wins, the establishment breathes a sigh of relief: Starmer can slip away on his own timetable, Burnham can be crowned without facing the country, and the message to every other “safe” seat is that no amount of anger will ever really change who runs the show.

If Reform wins, everything changes overnight – the myth of Labour’s northern invincibility dies, the coronation strategy in Westminster collapses, and the pressure for a full general election becomes unstoppable because a government already rejected in local elections has now lost a heartland by‑election as well.

That is why the only serious argument for “stability” now is not to rally behind Starmer or Burnham, but to use the ballot in Makerfield to force a reset that the political class cannot avoid or finesse.

The establishment’s nightmare is simple: that Reform does in this by‑election exactly what it has already done in the local polls – and proves that the electorate, not the Labour machine, will decide how this crisis ends.

@jasonleitch storing the Pfizer vaccine in boxes with an airlock will allow longer shelf life. Extraction of individual vials or groups can be done without exposing the whole inners at -70C to the external environment. Is this worthwhile?
