7 skills that matter more in practice than most things taught in engineering school:

1. WRITE A ONE-PAGE TECHNICAL SUMMARY
Not a report. One page. Background, problem, solution, recommendation, risk.
If you can't fit it on one page, you don't understand it well enough yet.

2. ESTIMATE COST WITHOUT A QUOTE
Order-of-magnitude cost estimation before engaging vendors.
Labour + materials + overhead + margin. Every time. Always cheaper to discover the answer is "no" early.

3. RUN A PRE-MORTEM
Before starting a project, ask: "It's 12 months from now and this failed. Why?"
Write down every answer.
Fix the top three before you start.

4. SKETCH FREEHAND
Not CAD. Hand sketching for communication.
The fastest way to align two engineers on a concept is a sketch on paper, not a 3D model neither of you have open.

5. MANAGE A VENDOR RELATIONSHIP
What to put in an RFQ. How to evaluate a quote. When to push back on lead time.
No school teaches this. Every job requires it.

6. READ A FINANCIAL STATEMENT
Projects get cancelled by accountants, not engineers.
If you can't read a P&L or a capex budget, you don't understand why your project was killed.

7. GIVE BAD NEWS EARLY
The most valuable engineering communication skill.
Bad news delivered early is a problem.
Bad news delivered late is a crisis.
The difference is always the same: someone hoped it would fix itself.

Today, Aecon announced that a partnership between Aecon, Pomerleau and Stantec has executed an agreement with Defence Construction Canada to deliver the Arctic Over-the-Horizon Radar Program Stage 1 project in Ontario: https://t.co/7xsKwDXtg6

Under a collaborative Integrated Project Delivery model, Defence Construction Canada serves as the project owner, and an Aecon-led 50/50 joint venture between Aecon and Pomerleau is responsible for project delivery. Implemented by Canada’s Department of National Defence, the Arctic Over-the-Horizon Radar Program is part of a key NORAD modernization initiative that will advance the renewal of Canada’s North Warning System.

“Aecon is purpose-built to deliver complex projects with national importance. The Arctic Over-the-Horizon Radar Program is a critical undertaking and Aecon is primed to play a central role in delivering this essential defence infrastructure project alongside Defence Construction Canada and our partners,” said Jean-Louis Servranckx, President and Chief Executive Officer, Aecon Group Inc.
