@LeoPrado47@therealdouglasW@tufpraise That is not true. The decision to allow Hirohito to remain as emperor was made unilaterally by the US, not through negotiation. https://t.co/3BW6AYkNcA
@SandyofCthulhu@tufpraise There were no negotiations with Japan.
With Germany there were some negotiations regarding terms of surrender.
But that’s the difference between WWII and Iran - Iran is not negotiating their surrender.
@therealdouglasW@tufpraise With the Japanese there were no negotiations, that’s what the “unconditional” part of “unconditional surrender” meant. https://t.co/5AF7By5mvZ
@Squirrels48@jbarro That is a big part of the problem, virtually no other countries allow ballots mailed the day of the election. Canada, UK, Germany all allow vote by mail but must be received by Election Day. This is precisely for speed and simplicity to ensure public confidence in the vote.
@realcopeaganda@gayguycandleco@ChrisCillizza What do you mean “y’all”? I’m a liberal and a Democrat you dumbass. I just believe government actually needs to be competent and efficient if you want people to support ambitious government initiatives and the taxes needed for that.
@realcopeaganda@gayguycandleco@ChrisCillizza We should change our laws because the current system is embarrassingly inefficient and dysfunctional and undermines public confidence in elections
@jbarro@Timodc Other countries manage to have systems that ensure everyone’s votes are counted yet don’t take weeks to do so. Other countries manage to build high speed rail in less than 18 years. But progressives in the US just meekly accept this level of governmental dysfunction here.
@Squirrels48@jbarro Other countries have systems where they allow as many voters to vote as possible yet somehow manage to count their votes in less that 3 weeks. Just like how other countries build high speed rail in less than 18 years. Please stop making excuses for this.
@gayguycandleco@ChrisCillizza Right, Dems have purposefully made the process like this which honestly is even more damning than if this was not intended. And the fact Dems don’t seem keen to change the law indicates they’re fine with this.
@gayguycandleco@ChrisCillizza This mentality, this learned helplessness on the part of Dems that this is just how things are is why CA can’t build high speed rail, why TX outproduces us in wind and solar, why housing is so expensive. We’re supposed to be the party of govt but we disprove our own thesis.
@ChrisCillizza@JoshKraushaar No other major industrialized nation takes this long to count votes. That there are Dems defending this highlights a fundamental flaw for Dems, that they think inefficiency in govt is fine. No wonder blue states like CA cannot build anything.
@ZaidJilani The only reason he’s doing so well is that the Democratic candidates are so terrible. It’s a condemnation of the LA and California Democratic Party more than anything.
@JohnJHarwood The California Democratic Party is in such a depressing state. They seem hellbent on having mediocre political hacks as their standard bearers in the gubernatorial and LA mayoral races. But the main Dem alternatives are slopulists or utopians.
@ezraklein@MattMahanSJ It’s really too bad California Democrats want either a slopulist (Porter), a utopian progressive (Steyer), or a braindead establishment hack (Becerra). Because Mahan seems like a competent, sane governance liberal in the Mark Carney/Daniel Lurie mold.
