One more thing about Toxic Beast — credit to @punk734 for pointing me to it: the small faces in the beast’s pocket. They don’t move at all. Only the light on them changes, flipping with the static’s beat — warm, cold, warm, cold, like faces lit by a screen. The beast pays for every frame: eight states, worked over, not in control. The faces pay nothing. Perfectly still, watching, lit by the show. And maybe that’s who says “well well well… it is what it is” — the ones in the pocket of the thing itself: disciples of a sort, with nothing at stake.
Studying toxic beast is what sold me. Eight frames, and it kept answering questions — of the @XCOPYART pieces I know better, none rewards close looking like this one. If you’ve gone frame-by-frame on other pieces, his or anyone’s, I want to read what you found.
Thx again to @0xRoses0x for pointing me at this work!
took me time with @XCOPYART's toxic beast. it pulled before it convinced — hypnotic, and I couldn't say why. turns out the why is simple (at least for me): the static is two frames on a fixed clock — you're done with it instantly, and it's never done with you. the beast loops too, just slower — eight states, small shifts, long enough to feel alive. but it's still a loop, and none of it under its control. the background pushes your eye out, the beast pulls it in. you don't choose to stare; you get herded. either the field poisons the beast, or the beast radiates the field — the name votes for the second. and depending which you pick, "well well well... it is what it is" belongs to the bystanders, or to the beast. thanks @0xBloomLabs and @0xRoses0x for brokering and @coldie for letting it go.
