Diesel Testing on a Tuned Volvo D11
Been experimenting with diesel fuel quality on our tuned D11 (unit 8298). This 11L engine is making over 500 hp, so it can be more sensitive to fuel differences.
We have five regular fuel suppliers:
Three delivering 40-42 cetane
One in the 45-48 range
One in the 46-49 range
North American minimum is 40-42, and Volvo’s spec is the same, but 45-50 is recommended for better performance. High-output/tuned applications often like 50-55 cetane for optimal response.
Recently tried a higher-cetane fuel and added a 2 oz double shot of Hot Shot’s Secret EDT (fuel additive with cetane booster, regulardose 4 cetaneboost and performancedose which we use is 7). This put us in the 52-55 effective cetane range.
Results:
On the same hill that normally required an early shift, the truck pulled stronger and held the gear. Fuel mileage is hard to measure since we’re not always at 100% load, but the performance improvement is clear and consistent.
For comparison, a D13 TC Volvo rated 455/1850 is actually advertised at 460/1900. In Europe the minimum cetane is 51.5, so their standard pump fuel is already what we’re chasing with additives here.
This lines up with what other operators running high-horsepower tunes have told me — they can definitely feel the difference with higher cetane fuel and good additives. Higher cetane = shorter ignition delay, smoother combustion, and better power delivery, especially when you’re pushing more hp per liter.
Worth testing if you’re running a tuned truck. Has anyone else noticed similar gains with 50+ cetane in high-output diesels?
Matt Walsh shared my tweet or X post on his video yesterday. We're making waves of optimism in the once dead waters of transportation.

These two units were used because they are both within a few kilometers of each other for the year, at just under 200,000 kms.
The traditional conventional flat top is a 2024 15 L, 18 spd, 3.55 truck. The driver doesn't try, drives faster, and idles too much (30% vs 6%). He runs faster, at 105 km/hr vs our 97 km/hr. But on average, he is only 1.5 km faster for the year.
For the year he used a additional 57,591.42 liters, which is over Unit 740's fuel usage.
Using the current average of $2.00 per litre, which is high but serves as an example, as this could become the new normal. That comes to a additional $115,182.82 a year. Using a four year equipment flip this would be $460,731.28. Or a measly $9,598.57, lol, monthly. Again additional to unit 740 fuel usage. This is over unit 740''s fuel usage.
I know this is a severe case, but I believe it is fairly average for the equipment and operating practises of this segment.
Thought I'd share this with you during this time of high fuel prices.
Units 740 and the new generation VNLS units 807, 808, and 809 are out working as April comes to a close. This month has been quite mixed: one-third was filled with snow, ice, and cold; another third saw fluctuating temperatures between cold and warm; and the final third was pleasant. Overall, the weather has been challenging, but early indicators for the month’s totals look promising.
These units are equipped with optimized 2.47 I-Torque D13 TC engines, 13-speed I-shift overdrive transmissions, AirDog systems, Dr preload, ecofins, Hot Shot's Secret EDT and fluid throughout, centrifuge balancers, and Michelin X-One WBST tires. Solar charging is implemented to keep alternator drag low, while flowbelow systems and tight air gaps help maintain airflow across all trucks and three of the four trailers. New aerodynamic trailers are on the way.
We are running cruise control at 60 mph with gross weights of 140,000 lbs, 950 overdrive, and 1220 direct. The 13-speed transmission provides one gear for low power demand and another for high power demand, ensuring optimal performance.
Please note that the sheets reflect imperial mpg.
Thank you for the cowbell sticker @pureflowtech
I had a little user error at first but we got it working 😭
I’m looking for more freight stickers for the bell, if you got one, DM me for address
