@MelegReizinger@StellaerSir@justalexoki It is likely that there are many animals with less developed nervous systems that do not feel pain as humans do, like coral and bivalves, but why bring this up in regard to say, mammals and birds, who display a lot of evidence of being conscious, emotional beings.
@MelegReizinger@maaanandamayi@justalexoki Those other organisms displaying aversive behaviors arenβt likely to be experiencing pain in the same way as humans, as they lack a central nervous system. Why donβt you go smash your testicles with a hammer if you think pain is just some meaningless chemical reaction?
@Aliens003@AMAZlNGNATURE Yeah man the vulnerable species of harmless large insects that were threatened with extinction from non-native predators is gonna take over the world
@graphorne098@plioblud Quick Wikipedia skim says they are highly social, forming huge pods and even interacting non-violently with other dolphin species, including inter-species sexual behavior.
@sacklunchfan@sword_mommy The bison? Yes, unfortunately so. Their milling herd tactics made them very susceptible to rifle fire, allowing whole herds to be easily wiped out in their panicked marches.
@thomasjweiss@JimDMiller It seems we are not really in disagreement then. I chose a dog for the analogy assuming itβs a non-human animal you would agree is likely conscious. But yeah valuing humans over other animals and valuing animals differently doesnβt mean you canβt have concerns over the lesser.
@thomasjweiss@JimDMiller This is an analogy. The logic for considering shrimp welfare is based on the same logic for considering the welfare of other animals. That being said, I will say I consider it far more likely that all mammals and birds are sentient than any arthropod.
@thomasjweiss@JimDMiller In the same way I assume other humans are conscious, I assume many other animals are as well. You canβt βproveβ that say, a dog has consciousness, but Iβd still say its pretty fucked up to treat a dog without consideration to its welfare.
@RealScottCCox@JimDMiller Oral bacteria donβt have neurons, thereβs no reason to suspect they could be sentient, and brushing your teeth is being directly protective of your well-being. Most of the people talking about farmed shrimp welfare arenβt even against shrimp consumption, so why are you mad?
@thomasjweiss@JimDMiller There are no means to fully determine for certain if ANY creature is conscious, it is always an assumption, even technically for other humans. We can only really speculate about the existence of other consciousnesses, based on their neural architectures and such.
@azubarrend@Borg70955376@FacesTwent@JimDMiller By this logic caring about the welfare of other humans is just some modern bourgeois luxury issue, considering humans did horrible things to other humans for the vast majority of human history. You might as well say slavery abolitionists are just whiny moralists.
@lowlandsapien Not as exciting as the depiction seen in the 1956 Moby Dick movie adaptation, though from what Iβve seen this is probably more representative of the typical open-boat whale hunt (especially considering the whale looks to be a right whale or bowhead).
