Mexico seems to understand something Ottawa keeps trying to avoid: geography matters.

Mexico is staying at the table with Washington, pushing for tariff relief and trying to work through the ugly parts of the dispute, including autos, Chinese investment and rules of origin.

Canada, meanwhile, has no comparable formal negotiating process underway.

That should concern every Canadian whose job, pension or business depends on trade with the United States.

We can dislike Trump’s tactics. I certainly do. We can reject unreasonable American demands. But none of that changes the basic math. The United States is by far our most important customer, and we cannot replace that market with speeches about diversification.

Carney chose to walk away from negotiations because he said the American demands were unacceptable. Fine. Then Canadians deserve to know what the alternative is.

More tariffs?

More lost auto investment?

More expensive inputs for Canadian businesses?

More retaliation paid for by Canadian consumers?

That is not a trade strategy. It is a holding pattern.

Mexico is dealing with the same Trump administration, the same protectionism and many of the same threats. Yet Mexico is still negotiating because its government understands that protecting national interests sometimes means sitting across the table from people you do not like.

If Mexico reaches a workable agreement while Canada remains stuck in a tariff war, Carney will have a very simple question to answer:

Why could Mexico make progress with Washington while Canada could not?

I do not believe Canada should surrender its sovereignty or accept any deal put in front of us. But neither should we confuse confrontation with strength.

The job of a prime minister is to get the best attainable deal for Canadians.

Results matter more than posture.
