@emleh06@jmhenner Such tremendous loss 💔 I’m so sorry Emily. I learned so much from Jon and really appreciated him being blunt and kind all the time. We will carry on his work. My deepest condolences to you and your family.
This is a remarkable piece.
3 scientists who study forest fungal networks look at how the idea of the wood-wide-web caught on, fueled by unchecked claims, credulous reporting, and confirmation bias - including their own. @undarkmag

Some highlights! 🧵
New paper! “Learning a Sign Language does not Hinder Acquisition of a Spoken Language.” This study provides evidence that families with deaf children can pursue ASL without concern of negative impact on spoken English development. 🧵

@LealaHolcomb Hall et al 2018 JSLHR @ASLresearch used a few executive function tasks w/ deaf kids but most of the group differences were from the parent report. Cates et al. 2022 found working memory to be a predictor for NNS reading comprehension.
@jmhenner Because these should be distinct effects? If we view language deprivation as a symptom then its severity results from various effects (linguistic, social, emotional, etc).
New paper alert! We found cortical features of selective language regions negatively impacted by later onset of ASL. Early language access is crucial for brain development, so give deaf babies sign language as soon/much as possible! https://t.co/hpeomHrJym
We had so much fun at the #deafnation expo yesterday! Such a great venue to connect with the Deaf community here in WA. And our undergrad RA Jessie just presented a poster on her own at #BUCLD!
I just submitted comments to HRSA for their future EHDI program development. Last February I completed my dissertation on the topic of "Early Hearing Screening Policy and Deaf Children's Language Acquisition." The comments below are from my dissertation.
