CAN A MUSLIM WOMAN CHANGE HER SURNAME TO HER HUSBAND’s NAME?

It’s Haram for Muslim women to take their husband names after marriage. You don’t have to agree with me, buts it’s Haram.

To start with, taken husband’s name is not practice of Islam; it’s western practice and Islam warned us not to engage in any practice that’s not the practice of Islam, if anyone tell you it’s practice of Islam, tell them you need evidence.

Secondly, Rosullullah is the most noble man that ever grace this surface of earth, he had 11 wives but all of these wives were called their by fathers name till all of them died, even the ones who their fathers are kāfir. Non of them answer the name of Rosullullah.

Thirdly, there is Quran verse that said everyone should be called by their father’s name even the children that you adopted and taking care of should not leave their father’s name to take yours just because you’re taking care of them. Check Suratu Ahzāb.

In conclusion, it’s there in the Hadith book of Ibn Mājah and Saheeh Al Jāmi that Rosullullah said "Whoever calls himself/herself by other than his fathers name (or attributes himself to someone other than his father), will be cursed by Allaah and the angels.”

This is for us to know the importance of parent and especially father. If adopting surname of one’s husband is that good, the first set of people that should have done that are the wives of Rosullullah, after all, Rosullullah is better than all his father in-laws and his wives would be so happy to answer his name.

Don’t force any woman to change their father’s name to yours after marriage, it’s sinful.

May Allah grant us the knowledge of this religion and not let the practice of the westerners takes our practice from us. Amin.
