I have just finished a Pastoral phone call with some of my students at @Makerere following yesterdays story of starvation and hunger at Makerere University.
I wanted to hear from the students what is really going on on this subject. The following is what I learned.
1. Makerere University has two groups of students. Those on government sponsorship and those on private. Those on government are about 5400 and the rest are on private. While are equally in distress the current problem is the students on government sponsorship.
2. They have not received their housing or food allowance for the last 3 months. Because of this, those who are residing in commercial hostels outside the university have been kicked out of their residences for non payment by the hostel owners. Equally they have no money for food and have been in starvation mode in the last 3 months.
3. The have made effort to meet with the university administration who have told them that the Minister of Finance reduced the student welfare budget by Sh 8 billion. Another time they were told it was reduced by Sh 25 billion shillings. They were told that the solution was the university writing to @rggoobi to ask for a supplemental budget. This was about 4 weeks back and despite the nature of the crisis no urgent solution was made for this humanitarian crisis of our most promising but vulnerable youth population.
4. The students effort to innovate thru trying to cook some food in the halls of residence was banned. Some of the low cost food vendors were also evicted and banned. Those who tried to get their message across thru a march to deliver a petition to the minister of finance were threatened with suspension and expulsion by @ProfNawangwe administration.
5. The students are caught between a rock and a hard place. If they keep quiet as @ProfNawangwe s administration wants them to do, they will starve and die. If they make noise about their starvation and housing crisis they will be suspended and possibly dismissed for embarrassing the administration of the university.
6. Research paper by @Makerere student Moro Oscar Cassius from last year shows that 95% of the students go without food because they are broke. They skip meals because they can afford them. The minimum daily price for food is about shillings 10,000 about US 3 dollars but the university is giving Shillings 4,500 or about US 1.30 one dollar ten cents. The students are supposed to do miracles of turning one dollar into three a feat only Jesus can do, not students.
7. Students are collapsing in their rooms from starvation. The biggest non communicable disease at the university hospital is Ulcers. This is presumably from eating bad food at irregular times. Last year Caleb Tumanyawe died from Ulcers just before graduation. These young people cant wait for the bureaucrats' within the university and in the ministry of finance to do their acrobats of supplemental budget.
8. There has arisen a dangerous loan shark money lending business which has put the young people in great danger. A young woman wrote this morning on X that many young female students are now peddling their bodies to survive the economic distress.
9. We need to help the students get the word out to the world of their current and dire situation. We need to Kulabisa this urban hunger which is destroying the dreams and hopes of our future leaders. We also need to take immediate action to provide some help to them. Jesus said, when I was hungry you gave me to eat. We need to mobilize all people of good will to come to the help of the students.
10. Actions needed.
a. We need to set up a starving student food bank or soup kitchen where well wishers can send support of both money and food in kind. All well wishers, churches, mosques, Alumni and parents can contribute to this cause. This effort should be student led and free from the conflicted university administrators.
b. We need to Kulabisa this 95% Makerere Student hunger. Lets give it a face. Lets help the voice of these students get out to the rest of the world. This is really not about @ProfNawangwe or government failure, but the failure of the @WorldBank deadly policy of privatization. It has not worked and its killing our dream. This was well documented by prof Mamdani https://t.co/uKFD4K6ysv Lets not fail our young people. Silence is deadly.
c. We need a taskforce of current and former students to form an independent committee to investigate and recommend the best policy direction to ensure that a permanent solution is made for this issue. Perhaps the convocation @mak_alumn and @SOLAA_Mak
d. We need all those in authority @MagaraLorna@DanFredKidega who are on the university council to declare no sleep until a solution is found on this issue. We are dealing with a Kiteezi type tragedy causing death. Silence and inaction as seen in the @KCCAUG can lead to dangerous consequences as now seen in our friends of @dorothykisaka and her team who are in prosecution. You cant use lack of money as an excuse. At least call all the churches, mosques and NGOs to come bring urgent help. Makerere has turned into a refuge type community with hunger as the major crisis. Lets do something together. And @ProfNawangwe style of shutting up the starving students with threats of suspencion and dismissal should be outlawed as unbecoming of a modern 21st century university.
E. I for one will not sleep for the next 30 days. I will do everything possible to serve my parishioners of Makerere with all that I can. I have just sent sh. 200,000 to buy some immediate meals for the most needy students. I know its small, but if we all can pitch in we can make a difference. I ask everyone who loves Makerere to join me in this task. Start off by reposting this brief report as widely as possible on all social media platforms. And those who can donate DM me. Can you also suggest a hashtag for the campaign. #HungryatMakerere #StarvingatMakerere For God and my country. #
