EXTREMELY CRITICIAL FIRE WEATHER TODAY ACROSS PARTS OF PACIFIC NORTHWEST!

A dry cold front crossing the Pacific Northwest will trigger dangerous fire weather across central/southeastern Washington and northern Oregon. Sustained westerly winds of 30+ mph with gusts of 40-50+ mph will overlap with humidity levels plunging below 15%. Hazardous winds could last up to 6 hours, with elevated winds forecast for 12-14 hours.

ERC (Energy Release Component) values, which is a metric that estimates the available thermal energy released per square foot at the flaming front of a wildfire, will approach or exceed the 95th percentile. What this means is that fuel dryness is near historic, record-breaking levels for the region. Because the vegetation is so dried out, any fire that ignites will burn with extreme intensity, and at heat levels that will make it even more dangerous and difficult for ground crews to address.

Please avoid outdoor burning at all costs if you are in either the red or the pink areas today!!!

“The National Weather Service has issued a Red Flag Warning for Saturday, August 1, 2pm to 8pm. This due to EXTREME fire weather incoming, including high winds (steady in the 20's with gusts to 50) and low RH values (12-18%). Some areas around us were issued a "PDS" alert indicating a "Particularly Dangerous Situation."

New fire starts will run and grow rapidly with existing fires exhibiting even more active fire behavior than they are experiencing now.

Almost anything can be an ignition source during these volatile events.

Avista has put out Public Safety Power Shutoff warnings (nothing imminent yet).

Both ⚠️Avista and Inland Power are in their highest levels of safety⚠️, meaning if the power drops unexpectedly, it could take longer to restore power as lines and feeders will need to be examined by their crews in person.

Firefighting resources are already spread thin due to the many large fires throughout the state. Saturday's weather could also preclude certain (or all) firefighting aircraft from flying at certain points throughout the day.

Fire District 1 is putting on extra staffing in preparation for this weather event.”
