Several, aged between 16 and 17, had no one with them in court. One 18-year-old who was alone when he came before the president of the District Court, Judge Paul Kelly, was disabled.

The judge handed several children Post-it notes detailing the date of their next court appearance, advising them: “Now don’t lose that. Ring your solicitor and tell them that date.”

Judge who threatened to remove mother’s custody conducted ‘flawed’ hearing, High Court rules

High Court judge Garrett Simons said the orders had been made without the District Court having heard the child’s up-to-date views, which was a “fundamental requirement”.

The constitutional requirement to ascertain the child’s views was not met, while there were also errors with the decision-making process and there was a denial of justice to the child and mother, he held.
