India kept fuel prices frozen for 14 months straight. Petrol, diesel, LPG — not a single revision despite crude whipsawing between $65 and $95.
Most countries cannot do this without blowing up their fiscal. India pulled it off because of one thing nobody talks about: refining capacity.
We are now the world's fourth-largest refiner. 254 MTPA capacity. Our refineries process crude 15-20% cheaper than global benchmarks because of scale and complexity. Reliance's Jamnagar alone does 1.4 million barrels a day — more than most OPEC countries produce.
In the 2008 oil shock, India had to issue Rs 1.4 lakh crore in oil bonds because we could not absorb the price spike. In 2026, with a bigger crisis in West Asia, we absorbed it without bonds, without subsidies blowing up, and without passing the cost to consumers.
The difference is 18 years of refining investment. We doubled capacity, upgraded to complex refineries that handle heavier crude, and diversified sourcing away from the Gulf.
Refining is not glamorous. Nobody tweets about it. But it is the reason your petrol bill did not go up this year.
Her name is Pratiksha Tondwalkar.
She was born in 1964 in Pune into a Scheduled Caste family.
When she was in Class 7, her father decided to pull her out of school and get her married. Her teacher begged him to let her continue. She even offered to pay for Pratiksha’s education herself. Her father refused.
She was married at 17. Her husband Sadashiv Kadu worked as a bookbinder at a Mumbai branch of the State Bank of India.
When she was 20, he died in a road accident. She was left with a two year old son and no education.
She walked into the same SBI branch to collect her late husband’s dues. She told the bank she needed any job they could give her.
They gave her a broom.
She swept floors. She dusted furniture. She cleaned restrooms. She earned Rs 65 a month.
She said in an interview whenever my son asked for a packet of biscuits I would get off the bus one stop early just to save the fare money to buy them for him.
After work, she enrolled in night college in Vikhroli. She completed Class 10 with first class marks. Then Class 12. Then a psychology degree. Bank colleagues helped her study whenever they could.
Her parents pressured her to remarry immediately. She refused until she had graduated.
She was promoted from sweeper to messenger to clerk.
She remarried in 1993. Her husband Pramod Tondwalkar encouraged her to take the banking officer exams. She cleared them.
She rose from trainee officer to Scale 4 to Chief General Manager.
In 2022, she became Assistant General Manager of the State Bank of India.
The same bank where she once cleaned restrooms for Rs 65 a month gave her its highest management honour 40 years later.

The Petroleum and Natural Gas Rules 2025 which have recently been notified will introduce a paradigm shift in India’s quest to strengthen and boost domestic production of hydrocarbons, and provide momentum to efforts towards achieving India’s energy security under the leadership of PM Sh @narendramodi Ji.
This article takes the example of Ashok Nagar in West Bengal to lucidly explain the positive impact of the Oilfields (Regulation & Development) Amendment Act 2025 and shows how it has paved the way for a better energy future.
✅ The new rules remove all ambiguity around what counts as the “value of the lease”.
✅ They put a time limit on approvals. Any application for a petroleum lease now has to be decided within 180 days.
✅ Instead of forcing companies to juggle multiple licences at different stages, a single petroleum lease now covers exploration, development, production, and even related activities like renewable energy projects.

For 60 years, Indane has been more than just a fuel — it’s been a part of every family’s kitchen story.
Celebrated chef @SanjeevKapoor joins us in marking this milestone of trust, safety, and happiness.
Here’s to 60 years of Indane, and to many more decades of bringing joy to Indian homes.

At @IndianOilcl , transparency and customer trust are our highest priorities. When a concern about excess fuel dispensing was raised at M/s Tajindra Traders, Karnal, on 23.09.25 evening, IndianOil immediately took action. On 24.09.25, officials from IndianOil along with the Department of Legal Metrology of Govt of Haryana thoroughly inspected the outlet.
All Dispensing Units were found to be accurate, the seals were intact, and no malpractice of chip change etc was detected. An independent committee as well as the service engineer of GVR (OEM) dispensing units further confirmed the correctness of the systems.
To ensure the highest standards of fairness, all IndianOil Retail Outlets are fully automated, providing transparent, tamper-proof, real-time monitoring of every single transaction. There are strict Marketing Disciplinary Guidelines(MDG) which can lead to termination of any outlet of a dealer if any tampering is found in either fuel quality or quantity.
It is important to clarify that the “rated capacity” of vehicle fuel tanks, as stated in user manuals, is only indicative and not the full physical volume of the tank. As per the Legal Metrology Division, Ministry of Consumer Affairs, Government of India, vehicle manufacturers routinely design fuel tanks with 15–20% additional capacity beyond the rated volume. This extra capacity is intentional and serves critical safety and environmental functions, including acting as a buffer for thermal expansion to prevent leakage due to temperature variations, maintaining vapor space to reduce hydrocarbon emissions and ensure optimal engine performance, and preventing spills when vehicles are parked on uneven surfaces. During joint committee inspections, all preliminary checks have indicated no evidence of tampering.
An official circular dated 06 March 2023 from the Ministry of Consumer Affairs, Government of India (copy attached), explicitly acknowledges this design practice and advises automobile manufacturers to declare conservative fuel capacities in manuals to prevent overfilling hazards, not to reflect the actual physical volume of the tank. In light of this, the dispensing of 76 liters into a tank rated at 70 liters does not constitute malpractice or meter fraud, by itself.
At IndianOil, every customer issue is treated with fairness, facts, and integrity. The customer in this particular incident, however, left the outlet without paying the fuel charges. We are also ready to extend our support to have the concerned vehicle inspected in coordination with OEM BMW Ltd to determine its exact tankage capacity and reassure the customer.
Efforts by certain social media platforms to create frenzy, confusion and fear in the minds of the consumers and spreading gross generalisations without verifying basic facts are mischievous, misleading and deeply unfortunate.
Your trust fuels us, and we remain committed to ensuring accuracy, fairness, and transparency in every transaction.
