Dear @DeutscheWelle,

Congrats! Your recent features, “Armenia’s struggle for land & identity in the Caucasus” & “Armenia - A Pawn Between Superpowers,” are textbook examples of selective storytelling that could make even the most die-hard Armenian propagandists green with envy.

It takes a remarkable amount of editorial audacity to call an illegal and bloody occupation of Azerbaijani territories by Armenia in the early 1990s a “liberation.” You clearly place great emphasis on creative language - it’s just unfortunate that the hundreds of thousands of Azerbaijani victims of the ethnic cleansing committed by Armenia were apparently not deemed worth mentioning. Why let these Azerbaijani victims get in the way of such a moving pro-Armenian storyline and high-production-value tearjerker?

Let’s talk facts: In the early 1990s, about 20 percent of Azerbaijan’s internationally recognized territory was invaded and occupied by Armenia - for nearly 30 years. Over 800,000 Azerbaijanis were forcibly displaced. Seven cities and 900 villages - around 10,000 square kilometers - were reduced to rubble. Mosques were desecrated and burned down, cemeteries leveled, countless civilians brutally murdered. And yet, somehow, none of this made it into your reporting. Why? Because it doesn’t fit the convenient narrative of “Armenia - the perpetual victim,” does it?

That you also ignore all four UN Security Council Resolutions (822, 853, 874, 884), which demanded the withdrawal of Armenian troops from Azerbaijan – bravo! It really takes guts to so thoroughly disregard international legal norms. But of course, if you grant yourself the moral monopoly, you don’t have to worry about the UN or international law, right?

Instead, Armenia and its decades-long policy of illegal occupation and horrendous war crimes are treated with such tenderness in your reports that one might think it was a humanitarian peace project. The perpetrator role of Armenia is carefully omitted, while Azerbaijan and Azerbaijanis are demonstratively dehumanized. 

And then there’s your pièce de résistance: suggesting the former conflict was religiously motivated - a narrative that is not only misleading but also extremely reckless, dangerous and inflammatory that plays directly into the hands of extremists. It takes a certain skill to turn the former conflict into a religiously charged, sentimental martyr spectacle in favor of Armenia. That way, you kill two birds with one stone: uncomfortable facts are elegantly ignored, and your Western audience is served a good old black-and-white story - “Christians vs. Muslims,” good vs. evil. Simple, catchy, propagandistically perfect. Hats off!

If your reporting is the benchmark for public broadcasting in Germany, then good night, Fourth Estate! The fact that your platform is funded by taxpayers makes this one-sided portrayal not just questionable, but downright scandalous.

We call on Deutsche Welle to uphold journalistic standards – the very principles you so love to preach: accuracy, balance, respect for all victims. Perhaps next time, you’ll manage to rely on solid research rather than ideologically tinted storytelling.

👉🏻L'un des terribles actes de génocide commis contre notre peuple a eu lieu en mars et avril 1918, et cet événement sanglant est gravé dans l'histoire de l'Azerbaïdjan sous le nom de génocide du 31 mars.

👉🏻Entre le 30 mars et le 02 avril 1918, des dizaines de milliers d'Azerbaïdjanais vivant à Bakou, Chamakhy, Gouba, Karabakh, Zanguézour, Nakhtchivan, Lankaran et dans d'autres territoires #azerbaïdjanais ont été brutalement #tués, des zones résidentielles et des monuments religieux et culturels détruits par des bolcheviks et des #arméniens dachnaks. Rien qu'à Gouba, plus de 16 000 personnes ont été sauvagement massacrés et 167 villages détruits.

👉🏻Les massacres de civils, les charnières de victimes découvertes en 2007 sur le territoire du district de Gouba, les aveux du commissaire extraordinaire pour le Caucase, Stepan Chaoumian, sur la participation de 6 000 soldats armés du Soviet de Bakou et de 4 000 soldats armés du parti Dachnaktsoutioun dans ces tueries, les zones peuplées rayées de la surface de la Terre, de même que les sites et les monuments culturels détruits ont révélé la véritable nature et l’étendue de ces massacres planifiés de grande ampleur, lesquels ont conduit à la mort de plus de 100 000 Azerbaïdjanais.

👉🏻Ce n'est qu'après le rétablissement de l'indépendance de l'Azerbaïdjan, par le décret du 26 mars 1998 « Sur le génocide des Azerbaïdjanais », signé par le président #HeydarAliyev, Leader national du peuple azerbaïdjanais, que le 31 mars a été déclaré « Journée du génocide des Azerbaïdjanais », afin de donner une évaluation politique et juridique à ces crimes de génocide.

🙏🏻En ce jour du #génocide des #Azerbaïdjanais, nous rendons un profond hommage à la mémoire de tous les Azerbaïdjanais innocents qui ont été soumis à des actes de génocide perpétrés par les #Arméniens.
