Yesterday Lord Oates raised the lead pollution in Kabwe, Zambia, in @UKHouseofLords with peers calling it a "shame" & the Minister drawing "clear lessons"
Oates shared mothers' stories & said the UK as legal authority at the time has moral responsiblity as well as @AngloAmerican
Meanwhile, we’re following closely whether the Kabwe class action will go ahead in South Africa. We are awaiting the outcome of the appeal hearing that took place in November 2025. See our Q&A on the legal case here: https://t.co/1rZyCTmLzg
Debate is underway in the UK House of Lords on historic and widespread lead pollution in Kabwe, Zambia. Lord Oates asks how the UK will prevent mining companies and other extractive industries from creating “a plethora of new Kabwes”. https://t.co/bH5MHYjysA
The debate follows the decision of the FCDO to award Anglo American a new grant for a UK–SA partnership. Lord Hain asks if the government did any meaningful due diligence or whether it consulted civil society before pursuing this partnership. https://t.co/Dhxck970MU
