Congress didn’t just “oppose” the Women’s Reservation Bill in 2026, it sabotaged it the moment implementation became real.
Let’s be clear: this is not new. This is a pattern.
📜 The track record:
* 1996: The Women’s Reservation Bill was introduced under PM Deve Gowda ji. The government depended on Congress support. Congress ensured it never became law.
* 1998, 1999, 2002, 2003: The NDA government under Atal Bihari Vajpayee brought the bill FOUR times. Each time, Congress support was critical to secure a 2/3rd majority. Each time, Congress blocked its passage.
* 2010: Despite this history, the BJP supported the UPA government to pass the bill in the Rajya Sabha. But when it came to the Lok Sabha, Congress got cold feet. The bill was never brought forward. Once again, it was sabotaged.
* 2023: The Modi government passed the Women’s Reservation Bill. With a clear majority, Congress had no option but to support it, a pro forma endorsement when obstruction was no longer possible.
So what changed in 2026?
Everything.
The 2023 law pushed implementation to after the 2026 Census and delimitation, effectively delaying it to 2034 or beyond. Congress was comfortable supporting a promise that lay far in the future.
But the 2026 proposal changed that. It mandated implementation in the 2029 elections.
That’s when the truth came out.
The moment women’s reservation became immediate and real, Congress and its allies moved to stall it yet again.
So let’s not be misled by statements or posturing.
Deeply shameful!
Congress, DMK, SP, AAP & TMC not standing with #NariShaktiVandanAct
Blocking 33% women's reservation for petty politics.
Where is your commitment to women empowerment now?
Nari Shakti deserves better than this hypocrisy.
Utterly shameful for Congress, DMK, SP, AAP & TMC!
They supported #NariShaktiVandanAct in 2023 but now refusing to vote for its timely implementation.
Putting narrow political interests & delimitation drama above empowering 50% of India's population.
History will remember who stood with Nari Shakti and who didn't.
Today, we take another decisive step towards Nari Shakti! Our government is committed to empowering women in every sphere. The amendments to the Women Reservation Bill will ensure greater representation for our sisters in Parliament & Assemblies. Let us all unite to make India's democracy more inclusive & vibrant : @narendramodi Ji
Jai Hind! 🇮🇳

🇷🇺🇮🇳 Took part in the 3rd #RussiaIndia Smart Cities Forum organised by the Government of Moscow City. Thrilled by the scope and enthusiasm about Russia-India cooperation in ‘smart cities’ technologies and innovations.
Held a very positive informal interaction with members of the media fraternity to brief them about various aspects of the energy scenario in the light of the geopolitical situation in the Middle East.
We discussed how the trilemma of energy availability, affordability and sustainability continues to guide India’s approach under the leadership of PM Sh @narendramodi Ji which is focused on meeting the energy requirements of our citizens.
Informed the media persons that India has sufficient energy reserves to deal with the ongoing situation.
Was joined by senior officials of @PetroleumMin and captains of India’s PSU energy entities at the interaction.
