Misuse of “mental capacity” in responding to suicidal people is a serious problem in frontline practice.
Poorly defined & understood, not part of the MH Act, but at times the basis of denying care in a crisis.
Referenced in the national #suicideprevention strategy.

The message needs to go out across frontline NHS staff that suicidal patients who have mental capacity are *not* outside the scope of MH care or, if needed, the MH Act.
This applies to patients presenting with self-harm, personality disorder, anorexia nervosa & many more.
Not everything benefits from being highlighted in the media.
It’s important not to make new suicide methods better known, to tackle them under the radar. Even if it looks like nothing is being done.
It’s an area of top priority for the national #SuicidePrevention strategy.
Delivering a workshop asking ‘what makes it more likely for staff to abuse patients’ & ‘can psychological interventions help prevent such disturbing events?’ An emotional but valuable workshop naming the elephant in the room @GMMH_NHS@MINTUKIreland
It was my last S12 rota day yesterday in Hackney. And more depressing than ever, intervention too late and not intensive enough and our whole system pivots on the fantasy that just get the person admitted to the ward and everything will get fixed. Sigh.

Bolton Early Detection and Intervention Service (EDIT) will be advertising for an Assistant Psychologist role in a lovely welcoming team with good support and supervision. These posts often have a short advert window due to the volume of applications, so I wanted to flag it here.
Domestic violence is a key risk for suicide in women.
Including female MH patients, in whom it contributes to 1 in 5 suicides, 100 deaths/yr.

@Rufusmay Would love to see something like this. Just seems so ironic that a place of supposed safety has alarms going off, without warning, frequently. Especially for those traumatised clients who have had the stuck fire alarm metaphor shared with them by their therapists!
Join us for the @rcpsychHoPSIG webinar where we will commemorate the centenary of the birth of Basaglia, whose ideas about ‘institutions’ in mental health became influential in Italy, Europe, and South America in the 1970s yet were equally neglected in the English-speaking world.
