“Do not ever let death become familiar.”
Read this, by @DinanAlasad, with your coffee this weekend. Consider the crisis in #Sudan beyond the numbers.

“If we care, the world will care. If we act, then the world will follow,” Obama said on #Darfur in 2006. “We need to take action on both a military & diplomatic front to end the conflict,” Biden added, and introduced a bill calling for NATO to intervene. Both were senators then.
When people tell me all politicians are corrupt and cynical I send them clips of @BernieSanders . A giant of moral integrity, consistently on all issues. AND a successful politician...
I get calling for greater access. But this famine will not be solved with food aid alone
By leaning into the ‘access is the key constraint’ discourse the UN risks perpetuating the idea that the UN is ultimately responsible for feeding the people of #Sudan, absolving SAF & RSF

Some say that Israel is doing more than other countries and militaries have ever done to protect civilians in Gaza. The data doesn’t support this: in fact, the picture is alarming. Much more can be done to protect civilians. Both Israel and supporting governments should do more.
Thanks to @illied and the @newhumanitarian for flagging our latest report on #humanitarian corridors at sea. Find it here: https://t.co/8fqj5HLjmE

1/2: What are the obligations for rescue at sea in peace and war, and what relevance do they hold for a potential conflict in the Indo-Pacific? We look at the practice of humanitarians like @SOSMedIntl and military experiences, including the @USNavy in the post-Vietnam War period
How can we ensure #civilians are protected in an Indo-Pacific conflict? Our latest research focuses on protecting them in the maritime domain. Check out our new briefs on humanitarian corridors, safe passage at sea, and more. https://t.co/1RyuH1EGpo
Nyala, S Darfur - after months of battles and now air attacks, crowds turn out to remind themselves of the fifth anniversary of Sudan’s peaceful revolution - and remind us all that Sudanese people are a cause for hope for Sudan
If ever there were a hook for more US news coverage of the spreading war & devastation in #Sudan: health clinics set up by @SAPA_ORG - a US-based non-profit set up in 2019 by Sudanese American doctors - for IDPs who fled the war in Khartoum are now at risk https://t.co/lXnbZHATdY
Latest offering - a report on the financing of Sudan's Juba Peace Agreement, written before the current crisis. https://t.co/J8Zqquqoxs
Why write about last year's fiscal arrangements? And what do they tell us about today? A thread:
I'm old enough to remember when Sudan's generals bullied then-PM Hamdok into calling for UNAMID's exit, ignoring the pleas of IDPs in Darfur for peacekeepers to remain.
And look how that turned out.
“There are piles of bodies which are visible from outer space."
Visible from outer space. Let that sink in.
And what is the world's response to war in #Sudan? Silence, firmly keeping heads in the sand, sclerotic apathy or...sending more weapons for more killing.
Disgusting.
Sickening reports & images coming from Ardamata, W #Darfur, inc of assassinations, grave violations & massacres of civilians, following RSF takeover of area. Those with authority must uphold international humanitarian law, protect civilians, ensure rule of law, & provide unfettered humanitarian access to vulnerable persons. #Sudan
Is a #genocide taking place against Masalit people in W #Darfur – deliberate attempt to destroy ethnic or national group in whole or in part? Here are some reasons which might explain why violence there is so intense: #ClimateCrisis, export-led #growth, #austerity, #racism.
Given the general estimates that "hundreds of thousands" were killed in the 2-year Tigray conflict, quite likely that more children died in that war. But Ethiopia's govt wasn't counting, and apparently humanitarian agencies weren't either.
The #UN is missing in action in #Sudan, and this month's high-level meetings are a chance to step up. The SG must appoint an effective envoy + find concrete ways to advance accountability at the root of the war, I argue for @MiddleEastInst
