Some are questioning the consumer categories provided by Rama Bijapurkar and claim India cannot be this poor.

I hope I’m wrong. But based on my own analysis, the data she provides is reasonably accurate.

Last month, R Srinivasan wrote an article in Moneycontrol. I’ve given the gist below. It explains what Rama Bijapurkar may be unable to convey effectively.

India’s growth story looks impressive on paper, but a comparison between Apple and HUL exposes a deeper truth: consumption and economic momentum are overwhelmingly driven by a tiny affluent segment at the top, while the vast majority sees limited gains, underscoring persistent inequality.

HUL, a bellwether of mass consumption, reaches 9 out of 10 households in India (90% penetration) through an unparalleled network of nearly nine million retail outlets. Yet its sales are barely growing.

In sharp contrast, Apple, which primarily serves a narrow premium segment with only about 3% penetration among Indians, is projected to generate ₹1.42 lakh crore in India revenue in FY26, more than double HUL’s expected ₹64,468 crore.

Apple’s sales in India have grown over 6x in just the last few years.

While HUL serves everyday essentials to the broad population, Apple thrives by catering almost exclusively to a small, high income elite hungry for premium products.

The result?

Headline growth numbers are buoyed by aspirational spending from the top tier, even as mass market demand for daily goods stays subdued.

Rising income tax filers signal some expansion of the affluent class, but broad based prosperity for the bottom 80-90% remains elusive.

Without policies and growth that meaningfully lift incomes across rural and lower-middle India, this skewed consumption pattern, where real spending power stays concentrated at the top risks making the country’s economic progress elitist and unsustainable in the long run.

Thomas Munro was a Scottish soldier and colonial administrator who earned such respect from the people he governed that locals called him "Mandava Rishi." Born in Glasgow in 1761, he came to India as an infantry cadet in 1780.

Munro grew frustrated with the East India Company's rigid, extractive rules. Unlike other officials focused on maximizing revenue, he cared about the cultivators and introduced the Ryotwari system to better support them.

This unconventional administrative approach eventually led him to the village of Mantralayam. In 1800, while serving as Principal Collector, the Madras Government ordered him to collect annual taxes and reclaim the revenue-free land endowment of the local Matha.

Local revenue officials were terrified to enforce the order against the tomb of the 17th-century saint Sri Raghavendra Swamy, so Munro decided to investigate himself. Upon reaching the Tungabhadra River, he washed his hands and feet and removed his boots and hat before entering the temple.

What happened at the Brindavana tomb didn't fit any colonial logic. As Munro stood before the shrine, to the priests and British secretaries watching, they only saw their commanding officer talking to thin air, as he stood in front of Brindavana.

When the conversation ended, Mantrakshate appeared in Munro's hand for everyone to see. Munro, who looked convinced returned to his tent and officially canceled all directives regarding the taxation of the village, and drafted an official order permanently restoring the revenue-free status of the Mantralayam Matha and its surrounding lands.

Later Munro revealed that Shri Raghavendra Swamy, who had entered Jeeva Samadhi 130 years prior, had appeared before him. That they both had a conversation about reclaiming the endowment and that the saint explained him how it would destroy the institution's ability to feed the poor and maintain its rituals. This order was later published in the Madras Government Gazette, Chapter XV (Adoni Taluk), Page 213.

It is said that on July 2018, 5th Generation of Sir Thomas Munro visited Mantralaya and took the blessings of Rayaru.

We had been saying for sometime. This was the plan all along! Slowly kill BEST from within and then monetize BEST depots. The reason why buses were reduced, wet lease was encouraged, private bus operators were given preference is because the aim was always to unlock the BEST depots, prime property across Mumbai. We have already seen what happens when you give away BEST depot land in places like Mahim - the number of bus services are no longer as they used to be in the area, many bus routes have changed. They want to do this now across the city! This is just murder of BEST!
