People think it's because of metamask.

Truth is, it's because of carelessness.

Here's how he could have simply avoided this 👇

1️⃣ Hardware wallet

MetaMask itself is actually as safe as any other hot wallet.

They don't store your keys but YOU DO.

And yet... It's still no hardware wallet.

Even when you connect yourself to a scammy website, your hardware wallet will still protect you and only approve another transaction if pressed by physical buttons.

The good part?

You can still use metamask or Rabby or... as an interface gateway when you connect your hardware wallet (if you truly want to).

2️⃣ Permission revoker.

When using dapps like Uniswap or OpenSea you have to grant them permission to spend your tokens and NFTs.

This is called a token approval.

If you don't revoke these approvals, the dapp can spend your tokens forever.

@RevokeCash is a tool that revokes these permissions.

3️⃣ Contract scanner.

I'm not a code expert. It's highly likely you are not either.

Use @DeDotFi their contract scanner tool to get a quick rundown when you look up new investments or tokens.

Dubious contract bugs or permissions can be seen here.

4️⃣ Common sense

It's likely here where Mark Cuban went wrong.

• Bookmark your exchanges
• Double check every transaction
• Don't buy 1-day old tokens
• Don't use the same password for everything
• Use 2FA

You would be surprised how many people do not use any form of additional protection.

Some even store down their seed phrases on their pc.

Seems harmless at first untill you get hacked.

Even when you are hacked, when you have a hardware wallet and there's no seed phrase written down, they can't get your hands on it.

Mark Cuban was likely careless somewhere here (to much money I guess).

5️⃣ Web3 antivirus

What if you still end up making a mistake?

It's here where you always get a safety net.

It's not bullet proof (nothing is) but the good folks or @interlockweb3 have made a Web3 antivirus (chrome extention) that gives you another layer of protection when you interact or approve web3 stuff.

Common sense will do a lot but having that "just in case" antivirus running for that 1% human error will do a lot.

Pictured below is an article that was published in an Athens newspaper on October 29th, 1938.

Mihailo Toloto was born in 1856. Shortly after his mother's death (after giving birth), a few men carried him up to a monastery on Mount Athos, a mountain located on a peninsula in northeastern Greece. He grew up in the monastery and spent his whole life on the peninsula until his death.

In 1046, Byzantine emperor Constantine Monomachos enacted a law which prohibited women from entering the region so that the monks could live in complete celibacy without temptation. Although Mount Athos is part of the European Union, the monastery has special jurisdiction over the region and has the authority to decide who can and cannot enter.

Today, over 2,000 monks reside on Mount Athos, spending their days cataloging and restoring ancient manuscripts, artworks, and religious artifacts. Women are still prohibited from entering as well as female animals. The only exception is cats because of their ability to hunt rodents.
