Something disturbing happened on my way to Iseyin today. The police stopped the vehicle I boarded and asked that the young man sitting beside me come down from the vehicle.
I had engaged the guy before then and he had told me that he's a student of one of the higher institutions in Iseyin. He repeated the same thing to the officers but they still insisted that he had to disembark from the vehicle. They searched his school bag, his food pack inside the booth, even checked his phone, opening his apps and all.
Mind you, this guy wasn't indecently dressed, didn't have tattoo, dreadlocks or any of those things used to profile young men. Maybe that was why I am particularly concerned. I mean, there was absolutely no reason for that search.
I could read the fear and embarrassment in his eyes. He was eventually told to leave when nothing incriminating was found on him.
My point is, that looked like harrasment to me, such profiling should stop. Take note that it was only this young man that was asked to disembark from the car. There were other men in the car.
This is the second time I am witnessing something like this. The last time, I was on my way back from Oyo when a young man was treated in same manner. This is pure harrasment and I can't imagine the trauma this could result into for the innocent young men.
It should not be a crime to be travelling as a young male student in Nigeria

Yesterday, I was trying to book a train ticket. The moment the site opened around 4:30pm, Coach 1 was already fully booked. I panicked and quickly checked Coach 2, which was almost full as well.
So I immediately moved to Coach 5, where there were only a few seats left. I booked one right away. Within 20 minutes, every single seat was gone.
But let me tell you what really happened when I got to the train station this morning.
People were there buying tickets directly from staff. That means a large number of seats were likely held back and later sold at outrageous prices. That is not business. It feels criminal.
Situations like this are why progress feels so difficult. When systems are manipulated and ordinary people are forced to pay more just to survive, it damages trust and fairness.
Nigeria cannot move forward if integrity is constantly sacrificed for quick profit.
