It will continue until a new party is voted in. Labor and the Coalition will pay lip service to reducing numbers, and then do the opposite.

Following extreme migration post-pandemic they can continue with the line of “we’re halving our net migration intake”. Problem is, they mean halving from the 400k+ odd they brought in during 2022/23 as “catch up” for the numbers lost during the pandemic. This is still well above the long term average.
