This galaxy is a little extra.

Meet Messier 106, a spiral galaxy with an extra set of arms. These two additional arms are made of gas heated up by jets from the galaxy’s central black hole. The jets’ superheated shockwaves are depicted in royal blue by @chandraxray.

The Milky Way is not sitting still.

It tears through the cosmos at roughly 600 kilometers per second, a whole island of stars riding a hidden current. As it goes, the disk flexes—rising and falling by a little, like a bird adjusting its wings in a long, silent glide. We are passengers on that flight: a barred spiral leaning into the dark, wobbling just enough to remind us the galaxy itself is alive with motion.
